Overview

AVER is seeking a Part-Time Senior UX / UI Designer to design, develop and deliver responsive web application services in support of a complex digital marketplace for the DoD. The designer will simplify intricate procurement workflows into clear, intuitive, and professional interfaces, create responsive layouts for desktop, tablet, and mobile, ensure Section 508 accessibility compliance, and produce high-fidelity prototypes that guide development through to implementation. Responsibilities
- Organize the web application’s structure and navigation (information architecture), map out step-by-step user journeys, and create wireframes, produce simple, intuitive, and beautiful high-fidelity mockups and clickable prototypes
- Comprehend advanced technical concepts and constraints and translate them into feasible UX; establish and maintain a modular design system (components, patterns, and reusable design tokens — e.g., colors, spacing, typography) aligned to responsive best practices
- Drive accessibility from the start (Section 508 / WCAG 2.2 AA), including audits and remediation plans
- Partner closely with product and engineering to see designs through to implementation (likely in React); provide dev-ready specs and assets
- Run rapid usability tests, synthesize insights, and iterate designs based on evidence and stakeholder input
- Document interaction patterns, empty / error states, and edge-case behaviors for workflow-heavy screens and forms
- Conduct design QA in staging / preview environments; file clear tickets and acceptance criteria for fixes
- Collaborate on data-visualization needs (dashboards / metrics) with clear, actionable visual hierarchies
- Plan and manage a part-time cadence (10–20 hrs / week for first 2 months; 6 hrs / week for 6 months; 1 hr / week for 10 months), communicating risks, trade-offs, and timelines
Experience Requirements
10+ years of professional work experience as a UX / UI DesignerExperience designing complex, workflow-heavy web applicationsExperience simplifying multi-step processes into intuitive, low-friction UIExperience following designs through the full lifecycle — from concept and prototype to live applicationExperience creating information architecture, user flows, wireframes, high-fidelity UI, and interactive prototypes (e.g., Figma)Experience establishing / maintaining a component library and reusable design tokens; familiarity with design handoff toolsKnowledge of React front-end constraints (state, componentization, responsive layout) to inform feasible designsKnowledge of accessibility standards (Section 508 / WCAG 2.2 AA) and practical testing methodsAbility to partner with engineers and write dev-ready specs, edge-case definitions, and acceptance criteriaAbility to conduct and synthesize usability research and translate findings into iterationsAbility to collaborate within Agile ceremonies (e.g., backlog refinement, sprint reviews) and manage design backlogExperience collaborating with stakeholders of varying technical and design backgrounds — from non-technical decision makers to developers — and translating complex design concepts into clear, actionable visuals and explanationsDesired Requirements
Experience as a React / TypeScript developerExperience designing enterprise / Government Tech SaaSExperience with ServiceNow’s default styling configurations and / or UI BuilderAbility to design effective data visualizations (tables, filters, charts) for operational dashboardsExperience with federal digital service standardsAbility to produce concise UX microcopy and content design for clarity and trustExcellent collaboration skills and the ability to work in a team environmentExperience supporting the Department of Defense or other federal agenciesKnowledge of procurement / acquisition domain concepts (DoD or federal) and secure / government environmentsLocation
