Main Function :
Assists the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, developing and directing the functions of the Nursing Department. Responsible for the training and education of Care Partners and Nurses through orientation, in service education, and continuing development.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists the Director of Nursing in assuring that care is safely and appropriately provided to all sisters on all floors and on all shifts.
- Provides direct nursing care as necessary.
Assists with preparing and administering medications and treatments as ordered by physician / NP.
Assists with planning individual nursing care, follow up and monitors Sisters for changes; promotes holistic and interdisciplinary approaches to care.Participate in 24-hour staffing if needed to meet Sisters’ needs.Responsible for training the scheduler, approves requests for time off per approval of the Administrator. Approves timecards for Nursing and Care Partners and finds coverage for Nursing and Care Partner call offs during normal business hours and as needed.The Assistant Director of Nursing will rotate approval of timecards and payroll with the Director of Nursing.Ensure that enough Nurses and Care Partners are scheduled to meet the health care needs of the sisters. Providing weekly updates to the Director of Nursing, who will share with the Administrator.Participate in daily rounding and is present on the floor daily as deemed necessary by the DON and Administrator.Facilitates care conferences for sisters who are returning from the hospital or change in condition.Participate in Nursing Leadership on-call rotation.Provides support as needed due to staffing issues. (providing coverage on the floors for call offs)Follows Universal Precautions and infection control guidelines.Demonstrate professional attitude including confidentiality and build relationships with Sisters and staff.Understands and complies with HR policies and procedures developed by the Sisters of the Holy Cross.Participate in the growth and development of Nursing staff. Assist with orientation of nursing and Care Partner staff and arranges for orientation to the communities.Demonstrates knowledge of The Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care and supports its values and principles in caring for the ill and dying.Responsible for daily chart reviews and keeping up to date on health information regarding each sister.Responsible for hospital follow up / discharges if the Director of Nursing is not available. Communicating minimally 2 x daily or as needed.Participates in Scheduler on Call as needed.Assist the DON with administering / reading TB tests.Responsible for assisting the Director of Nursing with Influenza and COVID Vaccine Clinics for Sisters and Employees : ordering vaccines, working with the floor nurses in obtaining MD orders and consent signatures, and coordinating the process of the clinics.Responsible for creating, teaching and presenting materials.Oversees Person Directed Living (PDL)training, recruits and facilitates the training sessions. Assists with curriculum updating and tracks staff participation. Provides follow-up of attendees to Administrator and assures participation and attendance.Assured Health Care staff receive mandatory annual in-services (blood-borne pathogens, fire, safety and disaster, etc.)Education and program improvement-engages in on-going assessment of learning needs and evaluation of all training programs.Assures that core Health Care orientation is completed with each new Care Partner and Nurse. Reviews and updates written orientation plans as appropriate.Assured orientees are appropriately oriented to the floors. Works closely with orientees to ensure new employees are thoroughly oriented to all aspects of their work and responsibilities.Provides In-Services on an impromptu basis, as directed by the Director of Nursing and Administrator.Maintains flexibility to ensure that he / she can accommodate all shifts in the delivery of educational programming and Clinical needs. Schedule will be approved by the Administrator.Other duties as assigned.Other
Complies with work rules, regulations and instructions, follows established systems and procedures, completes assignments with minimal supervision.Works closely with all allied care team members to assist in coordinating their training needs.Understands and complies with HR policies and procedures developed by Sisters of the Holy Cross.PERSONAL SKILLS AND TRAITS DESIRED / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be a supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of teamwork.Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, sisters and outside agencies.Ability to push / pull, bend stoop, kneel, crouch, and perform lifting and other common physical movements as needed for the position.Ability to assist with evacuation of sisters during emergency situations.Subject to callback during emergency conditionsWorks in office and throughout the nursing services areas.Subject of frequent interruptions.May work beyond normal working hours as deemed necessary.Subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Associate or Bachelors degree in Nursing. Current Indiana LPN or RN license required.
Experience
Three years clinical experience required; experience working with the elderly preferred. 1-3 years of supervisory experience
Responsibility
Work may involve non-routine decisions and recommendations. Works within scope of practice.
Problem-Solving
Problems require analytical, evaluative skills and constructive thought. May entail consultation with peer group or superiors.
Personal Interaction
High-level communication skills with Sisters, physicians and other staff members required.
Work Environment
This role requires regular walking to various
locations around the convents. This role also routinely comes into contact with Sisters
who may have contagious illnesses.
Equipment Utilization
May operate equipment within scope of practice.
Hazards and Fatigue
Exposure to hazards and fatigue are present intermittently. Works where bodily fluids and infectious wastes are present. Duties may require lifting up to 50 lbs.
Planning and Organizing
Anticipates daily workflow. Rearranges schedule due to emergencies. Arranges and coordinates immediate work in relation to needs, available resources and staff.
Supervision
Non-exempt and exempt employees in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
Budget Responsibility
Not required.
