Overview :

Fredrikson & Byron is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Senior Accountant - Trust to join our Finance Department. This role offers the opportunity to lead strategic trust accounting initiatives, provide subject matter expertise on IOLTA regulations, and support critical operational and compliance functions within the firm. The Senior Accountant - Trust will play an integral role in advancing digital recordkeeping solutions, ensuring accuracy in high-stakes transactions, and mentoring team members on technical matters.

Key Responsibilities Include :

  • Lead the development and implementation of a firm-wide initiative to digitize trust receipt and disbursement workflows, utilizing new technology for efficiency and adoption.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on IOLTA Rule 1.15 and maintain oversight of trust bookkeeping, month-end reconciliations, and compliance reviews.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve complex trust accounting issues, collaborating across departments to ensure timely and compliant execution.
  • Partner with attorneys and staff to provide professional, responsive trust accounting support.
  • Review and process closing settlements and assess 1099 tax implications, supporting the firm's tax and accounting compliance efforts.
  • Monitor trust account activity and develop internal control procedures to support regulatory requirements and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with senior accounting colleagues to support cross-functional projects and process improvements.
  • Manage communications related to trust activity, including client notifications and documentation for internal and external parties.
  • Initiate and / or review banking wires and settlements as required.
  • Support unclaimed property filings and help resolve issues related to client ledgers, billing, or stale checks.
  • Maintain confidentiality, uphold firm policies, and contribute to a positive, team-focused work environment.

Our Ideal Candidate Will Have :

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with preferably 2+ years in a legal or professional services environment.
  • Strong understanding of IOLTA regulations, trust accounting standards, and 1099 tax reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage projects and complex accounting issues.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial systems; experience with digital recordkeeping systems is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and levels.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail.
  • A proactive, problem-solving mindset and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Availability for hybrid work with regular in-office presence required.
  • Desired Qualifications :

  • Experience supporting law firm accounting, trust operations, or real estate settlement transactions.
  • Familiarity with legal billing, unclaimed property processes, and IRS 1099 filing requirements.
  • Experience leading training efforts or implementing technology-driven process changes.

    The salary range for this position varies by geographical market. In Minneapolis, the estimated starting annual pay range is $75,000 - $95,000 / year. The compensation offered will be dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, education, professional background, overall qualifications, and geographic market location.
