The Division of Colorectal Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University is seeking an academic colorectal surgeon to join our growing faculty. This position will be based primarily at The Miriam Hospital, with practice opportunities at other Brown-affiliated hospitals across the health system, including Newport Hospital and into southeastern Massachusetts.

The role is designed for a surgeon who is passionate about excellence in clinical care while also embracing the academic mission of our department. Approximately 80% of the position will be clinical, caring for patients with the full spectrum of benign and malignant colorectal diseases. In addition, there are rich opportunities to contribute to resident and fellow education and to engage in scholarly activity. The Division is proud to support both a General Surgery Residency and an ACGME-accredited Colorectal Surgery Fellowship, providing a stimulating teaching environment with motivated trainees at multiple levels.

Faculty rank will be commensurate with experience. The department values innovation, collaboration, and mentorship, and we are particularly interested in individuals who can enhance the research and educational missions of the division. Areas of potential scholarly focus include outcomes research, surgical education, health services research, and clinical innovation, though we are open to diverse academic interests.

Requirements :

Minimum requirements include board certification or eligibility in general surgery and specialty training with board certification or eligibility in colorectal surgery; a strong clinical background in surgical diseases of the GI tract; and commitment to scholarly participation in the research and educational programs of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Faculty appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, contingent upon qualifications.

The position is hospital-based, and the applicant will be expected to participate in patient care activities, teaching of medical students and training of general surgery residents.

Teaching (10%)

Participation as a preceptor in the Core Clerkship in Surgery, the Colorectal residency program and the clinical elective for medical students enrolled at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the teaching programs of the Department of Surgery at the Miriam Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital, which includes residents in General Surgery and ACGME accredited Colorectal program– as well as interdisciplinary teaching programs with other Divisions and Departments within the hospital and the medical school.

Research (up to 10%)

Pursue basic, translational or clinical research programs pertaining to the field of colorectal surgery. Participate in national, regional, and institutional clinical research protocols at Brown Health and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Patient Care (80%)

Participate in the clinical aspects of the division, including the inpatient service and the outpatient clinics. Other clinical responsibilities include performing procedures pertinent to colorectal surgery, including colonoscopy, and sharing call coverage and consultative services.

Service Responsibilities

Maintain a positive working relationship in all activities of the Division of Colorectal Surgery within the Department of Surgery and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. This includes attending Faculty and Staff meetings, serving on Medical School, Hospital, and Department committees, and working with faculty, the Division Chief and the Chair of Surgery of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University to facilitate the achievements of the department and the division.
