Description

Position Description

We are seeking a seasoned and detail-orientedControllerto lead our accounting and financial operations for a mission-driven organization with an annual budget of $90 million. This role is responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial systems, compliance with regulatory requirements, and the timely delivery of financial reporting. The Controller will manage a high-performing finance team and play a critical role in supporting organizational decision-making through accurate financial data and analysis.

Key Responsibilities

Operations

  • Oversee daily accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and compliance reports.
  • Monitor cash flow and maintain liquidity to support operational needs.
  • Support the preparation of cost reimbursement reports and other contract-related financial deliverables.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Assist in the development of the annual budget and collaborate with department leads to ensure budget adherence.
  • Prepare financial forecasts and variance analyses to support operational planning.
  • Compliance and Audit

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and grant requirements for non-profit organizations.
  • Lead the preparation and coordination of external audits, including audit schedules and documentation.
  • Financial Reporting

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal stakeholders, including Senior Leadership and Board of Directors
  • Maintain and improve reporting systems to ensure accuracy and transparency.
  • Policies and Procedures

  • Implement and maintain financial policies and procedures to ensure operational efficiency and internal controls.
  • Recommend and execute improvements to accounting processes and systems.
  • Personnel Management

  • Supervise and mentor accounting and finance staff, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to support team growth and cross-functional capabilities.
  • Project Support and Systems Oversight

  • Oversee the organization's financial systems, including Sage Intacct.
  • Ensure timely completion of corporate tax filings (e.g., Form 990).
  • Support the development and implementation of the annual organizational budget.
  • Maintain and update financial policies and procedures in alignment with best practices.
  • Minimum Requirements

  • 15+ years of broad-based accounting experience.
  • Active CPA license required.
  • 10 years of people management experience, including 5 years in progressive leadership roles.
  • Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting principles, GAAP and fund accounting.
  • Critical Skills

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and project management skills.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Proficiency in financial systems and leveraging technology for operational efficiency.
  • Ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Education and Certifications

    Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • Advanced degree or equivalent professional experience preferred.
  • Active CPA license required
  • Physical Requirements

    General office demands

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Frequent reaching, handling, and fine manipulation for using office equipment, filing, and managing paperwork.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, mouse, and other office tools.
