Responsibilities

  • The Family Advocate works with students and families on Attendance and Retention.
  • Collaborates with the school's support staff to determine the best service outcomes for students / families and with community and social service entities to obtain necessary resources, information, and assistance.

  • Maintain a caseload of advisees; meet regularly with advisees to review Success Plan and student IRC participation; participate in Career Check and Connect day monthly; facilitate the completion of the OMJ Readiness Seal for advisees; teach and / or facilitate Industry Recognized Credential(s) within your building during the CTE block of daily instruction.

  • Conduct the Student Needs Assessment as the first activity in Discovery; act as the school's Homeless Liaison for qualifying students; act as an agent of Child Find and ELL identification; create a Credit Flex Plan or Flexible Schedule in conjunction with the Principal and Success Coach prior to exiting Discovery.

  • Review daily Goal Sheet and calculate temporal equivalency to seat time for AIT.

  • Quick Access
  • Manage the AIT tab in Quick Access and documents (e.g., triggering absence; three meaningful attempts for parent / guardian participation on the team; date plan is created and implemented; student progress on the plan; additional attempts to retain the student).

  • Retention
  • Manage the AIT process; develop the individual Attendance Intervention Plan for each student including all necessary documentation in accordance with HB410; conduct AIT meetings; log EMIS reportable and non-reportable actions in the SIS; recommend withdrawal of students who are not showing progress and have 72+ hours of consecutive absences; implement retention strategies including home visits and providing community connections to resources to support retention.

    Other responsibilities include coordinating events for family engagement; tracking attendance patterns and creating solutions; identifying students in need of support and making daily contact; maintaining a non-judgmental positive attitude; communicating with school staff as a liaison among staff, students, parents, and the community; building networks with community members; training staff as needed; maintaining confidentiality; understanding academic needs; engaging community agencies and businesses for services and brand awareness; encouraging re-enrollment; participating in school and extracurricular activities; and performing other duties as required.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, social service, or related field
  • Experience managing a caseload attentively and efficiently
  • Satisfactory completion of state and federal required criminal history checks
  • Eligible for an Ohio substitute teaching license
  • Desirable experience and credentials :

  • Valid state Social Worker license (LSW, LPC, LISW, etc.) or license eligible
  • Experience working with urban high school / adolescents aged 16-21
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics

  • Strong ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management, staff, and business contacts
  • Flexibility with workload and priorities and strong organizational / administrative skills in a community setting
  • Ability to work in a diverse educational community
  • Knowledge of community resources including government, health, and other agencies
  • Ability to manage and communicate with difficult or emotional students, staff, parents, and community members
  • Active listening, critical thinking, and sound judgment
  • Ability to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines

  • Interaction with colleagues at other locations via on-site and off-site groups, training, and professional development
  • Travel as needed; in-person professional development opportunities must be attended in person

  • Requirements

  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Standing for extended periods, sitting occasionally
  • Ability to move around the building
  • Completion of all Family Advocate training modules in the Family Advocate Training Google Classroom
