Job Responsibilities
THIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING FOR CURRENT HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICERS ONLY.
This position serves the Troop 9 Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) Pee Dee Region : Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Georgetown, Horry, Marion, Marlboro, and Williamsburg Counties. Serves as Team Leader of the South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT Pee Dee Region. Coordinates and supervises employees assigned to the MAIT Pee Dee Region.
Assumes direct responsibility for and performs administrative duties of MAIT Pee Dee Region. Ensures compliance with South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) policies and South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) procedures. Administers MAIT procedures for orderly operations.
Responsible for organizing and directing unit personnel. Plans, schedules, and determines individual job assignments within the MAIT unit.
Responsible for reviewing subordinates’ reports, documents and other investigative material for accuracy, legibility, and completeness.
Must be an expert in the field of Collision Reconstruction. Required to coordinate the investigation and reconstruction of complex motor vehicle collisions. Assists and reviews subordinates' collision reconstruction reports.
Responsible for case preparation and court presentation to appropriate courts and assist subordinates in the prosecution of cases. Serves as an expert witness in criminal and civil courts.
Conducts performance reviews of directly supervised employees and examines those of other subordinates.
Employee must have administrative and management abilities. Must have experience and a thorough knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of the Highway Patrol. Employee must have demonstrated the ability to supervise and evaluate subordinates. The employee must have complete knowledge of South Carolina (SC) Motor Vehicle Laws, SCHP Manual of Operations, MAIT operations and procedures, and have demonstrated the understandings of the principles of collision reconstruction.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements – A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
Agency Minimum Requirements – Must have at least a high school diploma and the following additional requirements :
Preferred Qualifications
The knowledge, skills, and abilities needed are normally acquired through Patrol Training School, Supervisory, Planning, Administrative, and Collision Reconstruction courses. Additional skills and experience are acquired through in-service training and skill seminars. Employee must hold an Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR) certification or an equivalent examination.
The employee receives verbal and written instructions from the Lieutenant on a routine basis through memorandums, rules, regulations, and policies of the Department. The employee must be able to make mid-level decisions and make independent judgements on a regular and daily basis.
Additional Comments
Sergeant may have overnight travel on specials, seminar training, and call outs for major incidents.
