Overview
Engineer I - Transportation & Public Works (Civil Service). Acts as a licensed engineer conducting planning, design, research, and other activities involving quantitative analysis and conventional engineering problem-solving for the City of Dallas. Provides general project management and engineering expertise in the design, construction, implementation, and completion of engineering projects, including fire protection system strategies and safety regulation.
Responsibilities
- Provides project management over design and construction contracts for paving, streetscape, alley, aviation, facilities, drainage, flood control, bridge, sidewalk, erosion control, water and wastewater utilities, fire protection systems, and other infrastructure improvement projects.
- Coordinates all phases of engineering design and construction of capital improvement projects; participates in budget development and funding determination; collaborates with other City departments; communicates project status to citizens, council members, developers, and other City departments.
- Develops, designs, and reviews engineering plans to ensure good design quality and compliance with City, State, and Federal standards.
- Reviews and approves engineering design invoices, submittals, contractor progress payments, and other construction documents.
- Prepares agenda packages, administrative action packages, and change order packages for engineering contracts and construction agreements.
- Collaborates with consultants, inspectors, contractors, engineers, and agencies to complete designs and constructions; may perform site visits to verify progress, respond to concerns, and inspect project specifications; ensures budget adherence for engineering and construction projects.
- Performs other work as needed or required.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in engineering or higher from a program accredited by the EAC / ABET.Professional Engineering License from the State of Texas. Licensees from other states must obtain Texas licensure within six months after appointment. For Fire Protection Division, a Licensed Professional Engineer in Fire Protection is required.Some positions require a valid driver's license with a good driving record and may involve field-work and inclement weather conditions.Knowledge of city ordinances, design manuals, engineering standards, state and federal regulations, fire safety codes, and professional ethics.Knowledge of project management and implementation practices; ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with diverse audiences.Knowledge of civil engineering principles including safety, licensing, credentialing, and innovation; ability to establish and maintain relationships at all levels.Knowledge of contract management and ability to manage and direct engineering projects.Salary and Benefits
