Overview
The Core Tax Services Senior Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objections, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Senior Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy, and makes top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal / state agencies. The Senior Manager is a critical member of the office / region leadership team and actively participates in marketing, networking and business development within an area of expertise, maintains client relationships, and serves as the primary contact for complex questions.
Job Duties
Ensures both that (a) clients comply with all applicable authorities, while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and (b) self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual ("TQM").
Conducts top level review of return / tax issues and resolves all tax issues with the client; involves specialists where appropriatePlans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and / or partner as appropriateResearchIdentifies when research is needed; clearly frames issues to be researched and reports the analysis
Identifies complex issues to be researched by the engagement team and provides research methodology for efficient research processTrains managers / senior staff on research skills and helps to appropriately frame tax issues for analysisInvolves firm specialists, as appropriateASC 740-10 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax AccrualsApplies Firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding ASC 740-10
Reviews tax provisions and discusses components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions with the clientReviews prepared workpapers and helps others learn and apply ASC 740-10Tax ConsultingAssists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes
Applies tax knowledge with business / industry understanding to recommend solutionsMonitors implementation of client service plans to ensure efficient executionManages inquiries from federal / state agencies and provides assistance with protests at the appeals levelImplements applicable Firm strategies and manages client expectationsTax SpecializationDevelops in-depth understanding of technical issues in one or more taxation areas (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, state and local, international, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, etc.)
May organize or participate in external CPE training sessions; may train and mentor staff in specialization areasStrategy DevelopmentIntroduces and develops new ideas to improve client positions, reduce taxes or expenses, or provide non-tax benefits

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferredMaster’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferredExperience
Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and / or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting / professional services experience requiredIndustry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferredPrior supervisory experience requiredLicense / Certifications
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) requiredOther professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferredSoftware
Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferredExperience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferredLanguage
