Registered Nurse (RN)-Radiation Therapy

  • Summary of Position :
  • The Radiation Therapy RN provides patient care to outpatients receiving investigational therapy in accordance with the guidelines of the organization, as well as the Commission on Cancer. This position provides patient care to Radiation Oncology patients as necessary, including but not limited to obtaining vital signs, completing assessments, triaging patient needs, and delivering nursing care, and performs specific job duties in accordance with evidence-based practice, Oncology Nursing Society guidelines, Vermont State Board of Nursing regulations, and SVHC policies / procedures. In addition, the Radiation Therapy RN educates patient and family regarding radiation therapy, as well as side effects and anticipated needs, and ensures patient charts are properly prepared for visits. This may include obtaining recent notes, imaging, and other relevant data from other entities. This position also coordinates and educates care of patients receiving PEG tubes placed as part of their disease treatment, and assists in and / or carries out periodic and annual staff and peer (through peer review process) competency assessment in accordance with the Joint Commission, Oncology Nursing Society, and SVHC requirements. It also provides assistance to physicians and providers during patient visits and procedures as necessary, accurately documents all services rendered using current billing and coding tools, communicates patient information in accordance with department and HIPAA regulations, serves on a variety of SVMC committees as required. Participates in the Department Shared Governance council, keeps up-to-date on emerging trends in treatments in cancer care. Appropriately makes recommendations to the Oncology Nurse Manager and Practice Manager, proactively advocates for patient care issues to ensure that overall quality and type of care is sensitive to each specific patient / family’s needs, proactively engages in CQI efforts to ensure continual professional growth, performs other duties as required, which may include those learned through cross-training opportunities within the Cancer Center (i.e. nursing care for medical oncology patients within scope and training), provides patient care to outpatients receiving investigational therapy in accordance with the guidelines of the organization, as well as the Commission on Cancer, provides patient care to Radiation Oncology patients as necessary, including but not limited to obtaining vital signs, completing assessments, triaging patient needs, and delivering nursing care, performs specific job duties in accordance with evidence-based practice, Oncology Nursing Society guidelines, Vermont State Board of Nursing regulations, and SVHC policies / procedures, and educates patient and family regarding radiation therapy, as well as side effects and anticipated needs.

Requirements :

  • Minimum Education :
  • Graduation from an accredited Nursing Program required.
  • Bachelors' of Science in Nursing is required.
  • Minimum Work Experience :
  • Prior clinical nursing experience is required.
  • Prior oncology nursing experience preferred but willing to train the right candidate.
  • Prior Radiation Oncology nursing preferred.
  • Required Licenses / Certifications :
  • Valid State of VT RN License Required.
  • Health Care Provider BLS certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • ONS / ONCC Radiation Therapy Certification required within 1 year of hire.
