The Seabees Leadership Program is a very special part of Camp One Step's Summer Camp offering. A week-long residential camp for pediatric cancer patients and survivors aged 7+, Summer Camp provides an opportunity for campers to get away from the rigor of hospitals and just be kids with other people who truly understand.
The Seabees in particular, are a group of 20+ adults that are pediatric cancer survivors and former Camp One Step campers who have limitations due to their disease, treatment, or other factors. Guided by facilitators, participants focus on personal growth through achievement and service to camp.
Program participants have an important role in aiding the Summer Camp counselors and leading campers. They have hosted dinner parties for other camp groups, operated a Casino Night, served a special meal at a "VIP breakfast" for volunteers, and of course they get to enjoy participating in all-camp activities.
The Seabees Leadership Program allows former campers to stay involved with camp, maintain friendships, and give back to camp and the campers. Acting as role models and mentors to the younger campers while at camp, Seabees also continue their involvement throughout the year by volunteering at fundraising events and assisting with administration projects.
Facilitators working with the Seabees participants need to be patient, empowering, and ready to have fun. This is an overnight / week long opportunity and volunteers are expected to stay for the full week.
