Overview
Job Summary : Saronic is seeking a highly experienced Captain to operate our mid-sized autonomous surface vessel, Marauder. You will ensure safe and efficient navigation in various maritime environments, conduct mission testing, and support autonomous systems operations. You will supervise the onboard crew, monitor vessel performance, manage operational systems, and collaborate with onshore teams to achieve mission objectives. You will contribute to planning and executing autonomous vessel operations and to testing and development initiatives.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in maritime operations, excellent problem-solving and leadership abilities, and a steadfast commitment to safety and compliance with maritime regulations.
Responsibilities
- Vessel Operations – Ensure safe navigation and operation of the vessel at all times, including when in autonomous control.
- Crew Leadership – Effectively manage and supervise the onboard crew to foster a high-performance team.
- Autonomous Systems Testing – Collaborate with shoreside personnel and onboard crew to test autonomous systems and follow mission plans.
- Mission Planning & Execution – Assist in planning and executing missions to develop and refine autonomous operating systems.
- Safety & Emergency Response – Lead safety and emergency response efforts to maintain a secure onboard environment.
- Operational Logging – Maintain comprehensive logs of vessel operations for transparency and accountability.
- Regulatory Compliance – Ensure compliance with USCG, SOLAS, IMO, and class regulations to uphold safety and operation standards.
- External Coordination & Maritime Compliance – Coordinate with port control, port authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard, pilot associations, and relevant stakeholders for access, compliance, and approvals for on-water activities.
- Manage vessel movements, berth assignments, fueling, and dockside logistics in alignment with mission timelines.
- Maintain up-to-date communication with regulatory bodies to support safe operations and compliance with local and federal maritime regulations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for field operations involving external maritime infrastructure and support services.
Qualifications
Required QualificationsValid U.S. Coast Guard 500 / 1600T Master License of Self-propelled Vessels Upon Oceans. Unlimited Master's license desired.STCW Basic Training, GMDSS Operator, OICNW, Medical PIC, FCC LicenseProven experience in a senior officer role aboard crewed vessels in dynamic maritime environments.Strong knowledge of maritime navigation, safety procedures, shipboard emergency procedures, and regulatory compliance.Ability to interpret nautical charts, weather forecasts, and navigational tools for mission planning and execution.Valid TWIC, USCG STCW Medical Certificate, and passport.Strong knowledge of ship handling, voyage planning, marine navigation, port operations, and COLREGS.Able to maintain operational logs, maintenance records, and support inspection readiness.Strong knowledge of USCG, SOLAS, and Class regulations and the ability to maintain vessel compliance.Proficiency in voyage / route planning software, GIS tools, and maritime navigation systems.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make quick decisions under pressure.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate across cross-functional teams.Must be able to stand a 12-hour navigational watch.Must pass background check and USCG / DOT drug testing.Security clearance eligibility preferred for restricted or government-access sites.Desired QualificationsBachelor's Degree in Maritime Studies or similar fieldFamiliarity with maneuvering characteristics of jet-drive propelled vesselsExperience with autonomous or unmanned systems is a plusPrior experience working with the DoD or other government agencies is a plusRole Requirements
