Attorney General Kathy Jennings is supported by teams of lawyers and staff in the Criminal, Civil, Family, Fraud and Consumer Protection, and Civil Rights and Public Trust Divisions. The Office of the Attorney General includes more than 500 staff dedicated to serving Delawareans with integrity and passion. Deputy Attorneys General, with support from criminal special investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce consumer laws, provide counsel to state agencies, ensure public access to open government, protect the abused, and much more.
Summary statement
The Delaware Department of Justice seeks a Legal Assistant (Paralegal) to provide support to Deputy Attorneys General in the Criminal Division, Appeals Unit. While the Appeals Unit has state-wide responsibility, this position will be located in New Castle County. Appeals Deputy Attorneys General are responsible for appellate and other post-conviction litigation of criminal cases in state and federal courts. They serve as chief courtroom lawyers for the State before the state supreme court and federal appellate courts, provide guidance and research assistance to trial attorneys, and help develop professional development and legal training materials for Criminal Division personnel.
This Legal Assistant will prepare and file legal documents, conduct research, and assist with writing, filing pleadings, motions, and discovery, in pre-trial, trial, and post-trial matters. Preparation of documents for filing includes typing and transcribing handwritten documents. The Legal Assistant will assist attorneys at court hearings and will prepare and maintain court scheduling lists and court dockets and perform other related duties as assigned.
The position requires excellent organization and communication skills and regular communication with the courts where Appeals practice occurs and with opposing counsel.
This is a Casual / Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and / or other benefits. This position is currently approved for up to 29.75 hours per week.
