Departmental Overview

The Division of Ecosystem Sciences examines the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems including agricultural lands, forests, and rangelands, and their interactions with soil, air, water and organisms (microbes, plants, invertebrates, wildlife, livestock). We investigate the role of human activity in ecosystems and the problems humans create, including atmospheric changes and ecological diversity.

Position Summary

The Coastal Salmon Ecology Group at UC Berkeley seeks a qualified fisheries technician to assist with the management of, and research on, invasive Sacramento Pikeminnow in the South Fork Eel River in Northern California. This position will support a broad regional effort to manage invasive Sacramento Pikeminnow in the Eel River and understand their impacts on native salmonids.

Responsibilities

• Invasive Pikeminnow suppression and effectiveness monitoring. This includes : Pikeminnow suppression : working with teams to catch and euthanize invasive pikeminnow in the SF Eel River using a variety of methods (gill netting, electrofishing, spear fishing, weirs etc.).
• Salmonid trapping and tagging : setting up and operating traps to capture juvenile salmonids.
• Participating in field surgery to implant acoustic tags into captured fish. This effort will support a study to determine the survival of salmon and the effectiveness of pikeminnow suppression.
• Deploy devices to detect migratory salmonids.
• Video and sonar surveillance : deploying underwater cameras and acoustic listening devices.
• Snorkel surveys of river fishes : Surveys to estimate invasive pikeminnow and native fish abundance.
• QAQC data and enter into analytical frameworks.
• Organizing data and maintaining metadata from field studies, and conduct statistical analysis.
• Attending trainings with CDFW staff to learn acoustic tagging and pikeminnow suppression methods and learn field safety techniques and protocol.

Required Qualifications

Ability to reliably travel to and from the primary work location and other designated sites as required to fulfill job responsibilities.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary rate that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $63,257.82 (Step 1).
