Job Description

The Dry Dock Engineer will be the maintenance and technical expert on the systems on Floating Drydock #3. Responsible to the Dockmaster for the day-to-day management of a multi-disciplinary crew conducting maintenance, repair, and operation of BIW's Floating Dry Dock #3. Shall act as a backup for the Dockmaster when he is not present, overseeing waterfront safety and operations within the shipyard. Applicants must be able and willing to work and train towards certification as a floating dry dock FOS IAW USN MILSTD 1625D. Ability to self-manage and take initiative; must be a self-starter requiring limited supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Leadership : \n

  • Maintain a safe working environment at all times.

\n

  • Provide advice on waterfront safety as a subject matter expert.
  • \n

  • Contribute to attainment of company safety goals.
  • \n \n

    Project Execution : \n

  • Support the execution of the dry dock preventative maintenance program and maintain accurate records.
  • \n

  • Assist in maintaining the certification of Floating Dry Dock under MILSTD 1625D.
  • \n

  • Execute facility repairs.
  • \n \n

    Facilities Management :

    \n

  • Oversee day to day management of dock crew including work assignments, project planning, and direct supervision as required.
  • \n

  • Aid in planning and executing inspections and dock evolutions, including vessel transfers and launches.
  • \n

  • Maintains all mechanical and fluid systems on the dry dock.
  • \n \n

    Training and Development :

    \n

  • Interpret technical drawings and publications as required.
  • \n

  • Occasional travel to other GD shipyards, for training and support opportunities .
  • \n

  • Provide training to LS6 mechanics on dry dock systems.
  • \n \n

    Team Collaboration and Communication :

    \n

  • Collaborate with other shipyard departments to facilitate efficient operations and execute complex projects.
  • \n

  • Carry a BIW mobile phone and assist with dock scheduling requirements.
  • \n \n

    Continuous Improvement :

    \n

  • Execute all aspects of the Business Operating System.
  • \n

  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
  • \n

    Required / Preferred Education / Training

    Required

    \n

  • Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering, Marine Transportation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • \n

  • Formal training in principals and mathematics of ship's stability.
  • \n

  • Excellent command of English language.
  • \n

  • Demonstrated management, project coordination and leadership skills required. Strong written, oral communications and organizational skills required.
  • \n

  • Ability and willingness to work in and promote a true team environment.
  • \n \n

    Preferred

    \n

  • Unlimited 3 / AE Engineer or 3 / M license issued by USCG.
  • \n

  • Experiential or academic knowledge of operation, maintenance, and repair of marine systems.
  • \n

  • Familiarity with Maximo, NS5, or equivalent computer based PMS.
  • \n

  • Proficiency in computers, to include Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • \n

  • Familiarity with maritime and shipyard industry best safety practices.
  • \n

  • Familiarity with reading and interpreting ship's drawing, project specifications, etc.
  • \n

  • Successful experience in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.
  • \n

    Required / Preferred Experience

    Required

    \n

  • Experience in commercial / military marine operations.
  • \n

  • Basic level seamanship.
  • \n

  • Experience operating / maintaining marine machinery.
  • \n \n

    Preferred

    \n

  • 1 year experience in a supervisory role.
  • \n

  • 1 year operating under authority of USCG Merchant Mariner Credential as a licensed engineer or deck officer.
