R&D Scientific Manager

The R&D Scientific Manager oversees and guides the technical and research activities within a specific section or discipline. Primary responsibilities include management of R&D staff and technical oversight for research, development, and validation of new and improved testing for the reference environment as well as academic activities initiated by the Medical Directorship. Works in collaboration with, and under the direction of the Medical Directorship. This position reports directly to the R&D Director with limited supervision and latitude for independent judgement and decision making.

Responsible for hiring, discipline, and performance reviews for R&D staff.

Responsible for senior level technical review of documentation including assay validations and research. Ensures all work performed by R&D staff meets quality and regulatory standards.

Reviews and signs off on all validations within the group including provision of high level data scrutiny.

Provide mentorship to R&D personnel in carrying out their job functions.

Ensure new and existing staff are properly trained in all technical and safety procedures.

Responsible for budget preparation and fiscal accountability for the specific department with which they are affiliated.

Participate in quarterly management incentive, based on company performance, departmental budget adherence and other objective criteria as described in CORP-POLICY-0179.

Enforce ARUP policies, and in conjunction with the QA group, enforces compliance.

Writes and updates policies and procedures germane to R&D. New procedures will be written and old procedures updated on an ongoing basis.

Organizes and analyzes data, draws conclusions, and assembles those in written format for publication in peer reviewed journals, where applicable.

Presents research results at regular lab meetings, ARUP seminars, and professional meetings.

Assists the Directorship by providing input for Strategic Planning, annual budget, and Standards of performance for the Research Institute. Reports budget variations for specific area responsibility to Directorship. Meets all deadlines in providing requested information.

Motivates employees to maintain a positive, professional, productive, and safe work environment.

Attends meetings to assure job competency and communication within ARUP.

Becomes familiar with ARUP and University Hospital policies. Supports and enforces those policies.

Attends meetings as scheduled to maintain open lines of communication and to accomplish the organizational objectives. Communicates information from these meetings to staff and Technical section leadership and staff.

Attends local, regional, or area meetings, seminars, and workshops. Completes and submits travel requests per policy. Reports on information learned at meetings to staff and fellow supervisors.

Maintains effective communications and good working relationships with associated Medical Directors and Technical Operations management team(s) and staff.

Other duties as assigned.

Stooping : Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Reaching : Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility : The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate : Frequently communicate with others.

PPE : Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

ARUP Policies and Procedures : To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Sedentary Work : Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and / or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Fine Motor Control : Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Vision : Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Bachelor's Degree or better in Biochemistry or related field.

Master's Degree or better in Biochemistry or related field.

PhD or better in Biochemistry or related field.

Four years of ARUP R&D experience or eight years of combined ARUP and outside R&D experience beyond education.

Established academic productivity as evidenced by multiple peer-reviewed publications with significant contributions to a field of research.

Established record of formal presentations at professional meetings outside of ARUP.

Demonstrated experience in development, optimization, and / or validation of assays, testing platforms, or systems.

At least two years of demonstrated experience leading scientific teams and projects.
