Description :

Possesses detailed knowledge of the operation of hemodialysis equipment.

Sets up dialysis machines and tests all monitoring devices.

Sets up and primes dialyzer, flushes them to remove sterilant, and tests for thoroughness of flushing procedure.

Prepares and tests dialysis machines.

Cleans and disinfects dialysis machines.

Handles dialyzer appropriately to prevent the spread of hepatitis.

Rinses dialyzer for reuse and performs tests associated with reuse.

Understands and sets up related equipment such as bed scales, heparin pumps, and air bubble detectors.

Performs patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Initiates dialysis using fistulas, catheters, and grafts, monitors, and terminates hemodialysis treatment.

Administers heparin and saline in amounts ordered by the physician.

Keeps charge nurse informed of the patient's condition during dialysis.

Conducts clotting times as directed by nursing.

Makes determinations regarding the patient's post-dialysis condition and conveys this information to a registered nurse.

Participates in planning short-range goals for the patients.

Understands and follows Universal Precautions.

Performs procedures relating to patient safety, treatment, and well-being during dialysis.

Maintains safety while assisting patients with moving, sitting, or ambulating.

Ensures patients are secured appropriately during transport.

Returns to unit promptly in case of patient emergency, fire, or disaster.

Reports to the person in charge during critical situations.

Stays available and accessible while on duty.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on age-specific criteria.

Identifies physical, behavioral, and emotional characteristics typical for each age group.

Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment.

Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs.

Utilizes age-appropriate communication techniques.

Participates in departmental performance improvement activities.

Maintains patient confidentiality in managing information.

Contributes to unit activities by participating actively in unit projects.

Observes compliance policies.

Participates actively in care team meetings and committee teams.
