Long Term Substitute English Teacher

This is a long-term sub position within the English department - with the expected time frame of November through January and / or January through March - reporting to the Head of Upper School and English Department Chair

Major Responsibilities :

Reporting to Upper School Division Head, the Upper School English Teacher will

  • Teach English at varied levels in the English and or Interdisciplinary Department.
  • Use unit outlines and other available resources to build daily lesson plans.
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of students.
  • Teach three to four sections and, attend all departmental and divisional meetings
  • Be available to perform other duties as assigned.

  • Have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and work to create a supportive atmosphere and rigorous academic program in which all students will thrive.
  • Display professionalism in working with all stakeholders in the school.
  • Work collaboratively with department members to develop a cohesive curriculum that supports student growth.
  • Constructively solicit and use feedback related to classroom teaching.
  • Show a desire to work collaboratively with all members of the Shipley Community to positively contribute to the enhancement of our learning community.
  • The ideal candidate will :

  • Have experience teaching literature and writing to upper school-aged students (Grades 9-12).
  • Possess a passion for reading and teaching all types of literature across the genres.
  • Possess excellent written communication skills.
  • Possess a demonstrated commitment to use an equitable lens in selecting and teaching literature.
  • Demonstrate an excellent ability to differentiate instruction in order to meet all students' needs.
  • Hold a clear educational philosophy, consistent with the mission of the school.
  • Hold a degree in English literature or related field.
  • Be excited to work with and appropriately challenge students at all levels.
  • Be willing to experiment and try new methods and approaches to challenge and support students.
  • Help students become confident analytical thinkers who can communicate their ideas in writing.
  • Demonstrate an excellent ability to differentiate instruction in order to meet all students' needs.
