Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing specialized 911 radio and communications work receiving and dispatching calls and messages for police services, and may be required to dispatch fire and emergency medical services for the city. Work schedule will be on a rotating shift that typically includes a 10 or 12-hour shift with a 4-hour shift to ensure 40 hours per week. Subject to be called in on a holiday or during an emergency situation.

Essential Job Functions

• Interacts on phones and radios with culturally and socially diverse population.
• Receives emergency calls via telephone(s) and properly route 911 emergency calls.
• Hears and understands radio communication.
• Maintains on-the-air radio discipline in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
• Maintains contact with all mobile units.
• Answers questions for officers on the inquiry radio channel and prepares written statements for case entries.
• Acts as a receptionist.
• Answers questions over the phone regarding civil, criminal, and traffic laws or directs calls to appropriate agencies.
• Verifies and enters data into a computer as it is being received and monitors up to two radio channels simultaneously.
• Serves as inquiry operator by processing all requests from field units.
• Utilizes various communication techniques to keep callers calm in order to obtain necessary information.
• Works rotating shifts and performs in accordance with department policies and procedures, and local, state, and federal regulations.
• Requires responsibility for making decisions regarding actions to be taken and for independent judgment in the interpretation of policies and procedures, as well as application of laws and ordinances.
• Adheres to all safety rules and regulations.
• Adheres to work schedule and attendance requirements.
• Performs other duties as directed and required.
• Must create a positive public image as a representative of the city.
