Custodian Position
Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, Custodial Services Coordinator, or an assigned supervisor, maintain an assigned school plant, group of buildings, set of classrooms or office space in a clean, orderly and secure manner during an assigned shift.
Dust and polish furniture and woodwork; clean chalkboards / whiteboards and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners. Empty and clean the waste receptacles; refill dispensers with appropriate soap and paper products. Vacuum, sweep, and / or mop hard surface or carpeted floor areas. Clean, scrub and disinfect restrooms, showers and related areas; wash windows, walls, tables and benches; polish metal work, clean sinks, mirrors and other bathroom fixtures using the appropriate cleaning products and equipment. Maintain custodial equipment and materials; maintain various classroom and restroom supplies, including paper towels, soap and related items; request additional materials according to established procedures. Assure security of buildings and grounds during assigned times; lower flags; lock and unlock doors and gates. Pick up paper and other debris from grounds and buildings. Report damage or unsafe conditions to assigned supervisor. Maintain and utilize the appropriate personal protective equipment used in custodial work. Must demonstrate attendance sufficient to complete the duties of the position as required. Operate a District vehicle to conduct work. Utilize power washer as needed. Clean up vomit and other waste as required. Adjust and arrange furniture and equipment; set-up facilities for special events and meetings as assigned. Perform general maintenance duties as requested. Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning blackboards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures. Cleaning materials, disinfectants and equipment used in custodial work. Legal and defensive driving practices. Safety practices and work methods. Requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Ability to maintain an assigned school plant, group of buildings or office space in a clean, orderly and secure manner during an assigned shift. Learn the schedules, procedures and use of custodial tools. Use common cleaning equipment and materials in a safe and efficient manner. Climb ladders and work from heights. Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and special events. Read and understand product labels and Material Safety Data Sheets. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Work cooperatively with others. Meet schedules and time lines. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Perform simple and repetitive tasks. Maintain a work pace appropriate to a given workload.
Any combination equivalent to : sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above, typically met by one year of recent (within the past five years) full-time verifiable custodial experience in a large institutional or multi-facility setting, or an "Excellent" rating as a substitute Custodian in Downey Unified School District. Experience in a school district setting is highly desirable. Valid California driver's license. Must be, and remain, insurable under the District's vehicle driver's insurance policy at the standard rate. Indoor and outdoor work environment; subject to regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors. Standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist; pushing and pulling cleaning equipment; lifting and moving furniture weighing up to 50 pounds; and climbing ladders, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to replace lights in high places. Exposure to airborne dust and vapors from chemicals such as ammonia and bleach; working on ladders.
