MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Plays integral role in Commissary and animal diet preparation
- Assist Animal Care Biologists with essential daily tasks
- Reports to the Assistant Curator
- Keeps support areas clean, organized and safe
- Complies with all SOPs pertaining to daily operations and safety
- Maintains records in accordance with protocols or as directed
- Cross-trains with other staff within the department : fresh and saltwater systems, reptiles, amphibians, and penguins.
- Promotes conservation, animal welfare, and good stewardship in daily tasks
- Shift : Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday : 8am to 2pm
QUALIFICATIONS :
A fourth-year student studying toward a four-year degree in aquatic sciences, biology, or related field (school schedule must accommodate minimum work requirements throughout school terms); or graduate; or equivalent successful work experience in aquaculture and / or animal husbandryHusbandry experience acceptable from employment or internships / volunteering at a public aquarium, aquaculture facility, zoo, or school biology department activities. Advanced hobbyist experience is acceptable with demonstrated disease identification, isolation, and treatment planningStrong interpersonal skills and ethics that generate and sustain a positive team atmosphere and professional environmentA valid driver's licenseCertification from a recognized S.C.U.B.A. training organization highly desiredAbility to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidaysPerforms other related duties as assigned by Curator and / or Assistant CuratorPHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and SCUBA dive physical (if applicable)In good health and capable of performing strenuous and / or heavy physical laborNo history of allergies related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to workAbility to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoopNo impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance and agility of movement which might interfere with ability to workPhysical strength, including the ability to lift up to 25 poundsImmunocompetence (possible exposure to infections and parasitic disease)Note : Position will involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous and unpredictable animal species, and potentially dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and / or drugs. Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required. (e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns)
