Overview
A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park's existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to assist with the management of daily operations of the Sanitation division. Successful performance contributes to the efficient and effective operation of the Sanitation division, and, by extension, Public Works Department. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents. This position is responsible for the overall collection of trash, garbage, and other refuse; recycling; and sanitation-related inspections for the City.
Responsibilities
- Supervises the activities of subordinates in the proper collection of City sanitation; assigns and schedules work; checks and reviews work in progress; ensures that appropriate safety standards are followed.
- Assists with hiring, training, and instructing Sanitation personnel in work methods, rules, and standards.
- Monitors safety regulations at worksites to protect City personnel, equipment, and existing structures.
- Works with Sanitation Lead Driver to ensure that sanitation collection is properly completed.
- Facilitates problem-solving as needed, regarding equipment scheduling, assignments, and employee complaints.
- Performs field inspections and resolves problems as deemed necessary.
- Respond to customer inquiries and handle difficult customer-related problems.
- Assists in the preparation of timecards and other reports.
- May operate refuse trucks of all types and related apparatus.
- Initiates appropriate disciplinary action under the direction; recommends all disciplinary actions leading up to termination to the Sanitation Superintendent when necessary.
- Responsible for maintenance and operational readiness of sanitation trucks.
- Coordinates equipment repairs with the City garage.
- May support the activities of other Public Works divisions as necessary.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Practical knowledge of supervisory and scheduling principles and techniques and thorough knowledge of City policies and regulations about sanitation collection, sanitation code enforcement, and recycling.General knowledge of the required maintenance of sanitation equipment.Ability to safely and effectively operate any type of trash collection vehicle in use by the City, including provisions necessary to safeguard the collection crews.Ability to prepare routine and specialized reports.Ability to identify and implement process improvements and develop training packages and materials.Ability to speak before large groups of people.Ability to deal with the public in unstructured and sometimes hostile situations.Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures.Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.Knowledge of the material commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities as related to assigned areas.Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to the work being conducted.Skill in performing various manual labor assignments as needed.Ability to perform general equipment / tool maintenance duties.Ability to interpret instructions and efficiently carry them out with general supervision.Ability to perform tasks involving heavy manual labor.Effective analytical and decision-making skills.Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.Extreme physical activity. Bachelor's degree preferred; High School diploma or equivalent required.Four (4) years of experience in a related work environment, with at least one (1) year in a supervisory position.Possession of a Valid State Class B CDL certification is required; prefer flagging instructor certification; prefer membership in National Safety Council and SWANA.Equivalent combination of education and experience.Experience in communicating with diverse communities and establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.Proficiency in MS Office Suite, and knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.Pre-employment screening is required : criminal background check and drug testing.J-18808-Ljbffr
