Role Description

The CNC Programmer / Operator is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating CNC lathe and milling machines to produce precision metal parts and components. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of CNC programming, machining techniques, and the ability to read technical drawings and blueprints. The CNC Lathe / Mill Programmer / Operator will also be responsible for ensuring the quality of the machined parts, maintaining equipment, and adhering to safety and production standards. Working with and instructing other machinists, to make the shop run as efficient as possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • CNC Programming and Setup
  • Write and modify CNC programs using G-code or CAM software to create precise and accurate machine instructions.
  • Set up CNC lathes for various machining operations, including loading raw materials, selecting tooling, and securing workpieces.
  • Adjust machine settings (speed, feed, tool offsets) as necessary to ensure parts meet specifications.
  • Machine Operation
  • Operate CNC lathe machines to manufacture parts based on work orders and engineering drawings.
  • Monitor machine performance during the production run, making adjustments to ensure optimal quality and efficiency.
  • Conduct regular inspections of workpieces during machining to verify dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and part integrity.
  • Quality Control and Inspection
  • Measure and inspect parts using precision tools such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges to ensure compliance with specifications and tolerances.
  • Perform routine quality checks, including first-article inspections and in-process checks, to identify and address any defects.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections and quality control activities.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting
  • Perform routine maintenance on CNC lathe machines, including cleaning, lubrication, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues with CNC programs, tooling, or machinery to minimize downtime.
  • Coordinate with the maintenance team for more complex repairs and machine overhauls.
  • Tool Management
  • Select and install the appropriate cutting tools, inserts, and fixtures for each job.
  • Maintain and monitor the condition of tools, replacing or sharpening tools as needed to maintain production quality.
  • Ensure proper tool storage and organization.
  • Safety and Compliance
  • Adhere to all company safety procedures and OSHA regulations, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area to reduce hazards and ensure a safe environment.
  • Follow environmental and waste disposal guidelines for the proper handling of materials and byproducts.
  • Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintain detailed program headings, records of machine setups, tool usage, work orders, and production logs.
  • Communicate with the production supervisor regarding job progress, any issues encountered, and suggestions for process improvements.
  • Document any adjustments made to the CNC programs or machine settings.
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Suggest improvements to machining processes, tooling, or machine setup to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Participate in team meetings or training sessions to stay current with new machining technologies, techniques, and safety protocols.
  • Skills and Competencies :
  • Proficiency in CNC programming software (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and engineering specifications.
  • Skilled in the use of precision measuring tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, height gauges).
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to independently troubleshoot machine and program issues.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Basic knowledge of machine maintenance and repair

Working Conditions

  • Work in a production environment with exposure to machinery, noise, and temperature variations.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, and ear protection.
  • May require occasional overtime or weekend work based on production demands.
