Employee Relations Manager

Description

The Employee Relations Manager plays a critical role in fostering a positive, equitable, and productive work environment across the organization. This role manages all aspects of employee relations, ensuring compliance with employment laws and organizational policies while supporting leadership and staff in resolving workplace issues. The Employee Relations Manager partners closely with HR leadership to design and implement proactive employee engagement, performance management, and workplace culture initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations matters, including investigations, conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, and policy interpretation.

Conduct thorough, confidential, and timely investigations into employee complaints, grievances, and allegations of misconduct.

Provide coaching and guidance to managers and supervisors on employee performance, corrective actions, and consistent policy application.

Collaborate with the HR Director and Legal Counsel to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (e.g., FEHA, FMLA, ADA, CFRA).

Develop and implement employee relations programs that promote trust, engagement, and accountability.

Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of all employee relations cases and outcomes.

Partner with HR and leadership teams to analyze trends and recommend strategies to mitigate risk and improve organizational culture.

Support performance management processes, including progressive discipline and performance improvement plans.

Lead training for supervisors on effective employee management, workplace conduct, and conflict resolution.

Contribute to policy review and updates to align with best practices and legal standards.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.

5+ years of progressive HR experience with a strong focus on employee relations, investigations, and compliance.

In-depth knowledge of California labor and employment laws.

Proven ability to manage sensitive issues with discretion, diplomacy, and professionalism.

Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Experience working in a nonprofit or public service organization is a plus.

PHR, SPHR, or SHRM-CP / SHRM-SCP certification preferred.
