Job Purpose :
The purpose of the Veterinary ICU Technician is to provide high quality medical support and nursing care to critical care patients.
The Veterinary ICU Technicians assist our board certified critical care doctors in our state of the art ICU to provide constant care to critical care patients.
All teams are under the direction of the doctor on staff.
The doctor is the lead, and will be prioritizing patients, directing the team and is the ultimate decision maker for all medical treatments, while Shift Leads are the leads for managing the floor and its flow.
Duties & Responsibilities :
Technical Duties
Identify sudden or minor changes in a patient’s medical condition
Performs and documents ongoing assessments including observation, physical examination, laboratory / test results, and patient response to procedural intervention
Participates in the identification and clarification of patient needs, as evidenced by participation in multidisciplinary care planning, to achieve optimal patient outcomes
Demonstration of sound decision-making in emergency scenarios based on patient conditions such as vital signs, patient presentation, and assessments.
Ability to think critically in order to learn and maintain a high level of patient care
Proficient IV catheter placement; Use and maintain IV pumps
Understands and carries out written and oral directions
Proficient and accurate drug calculations and administration
Quality nursing and husbandry care of patients
Strong working knowledge of veterinary procedures and pharmacology
Perform in‐hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for outside labs, as needed when lab tech is not available.
Report diagnostic testing results to veterinarians
Perform and / or participate in all other diagnostics such as radiology, ultrasound, ECG, BP, and glucose monitoring
Provide nursing care for in‐hospital patients including all DVM requested treatments, diagnostics, and medications Accurately and completely record all treatments
Perform client callbacks as necessary
Maintain legally defensible medical records in cooperation with veterinarians
Actively engages in Rounds Rounds delivered / received at shift changes, anytime a staff member comes on shift or leaves a shift Rounds will be complete, detailed, and relative to patient & client care
Ability to monitor anesthesia utilizing equipment such as pulse oximeter and electrocardiogram Keep accurate anesthesia / surgical medical records
Maintain cleanliness of ICU, working an patient areas.
Ability to delegate cleaning tasks to Technician Assistants and Kennel Assistants as necessary Administrative Duties
Log controlled drugs
Know how to use the inventory module in our veterinary practice‐management software
Restock shelves and drawers in exam rooms and treatment area
Follow OSHA requirements
Follow practice’s health and safety protocols
Be proficient in using our veterinary practice‐management software (EzyVet, SmartFlow, Timeless)
Assist Client Administrators as necessary
Attending staff and individual meetings as scheduled Teamwork
