Job Description

Job Description

Brotman Law is looking for a senior associate attorney (6+ years) to join our tax controversy / planning / optimization practice.

Nevertheless, if you are at a junior partner or partner level and the below calls to you, we strongly encourage you to submit a resume regardless. We are always interested in meeting with good people and exploring opportunities to work together.

There are four things that you should know before applying for the position :

1) These are our core values :

  • Accountability : We own what we do and how we perform every step of the way.
  • Authenticity : We do what we say and say what we mean. We practice transparency.
  • Caring : You matter. We matter. The client matters.
  • Excellence : We are relentless in our pursuit of the highest standards of quality, dedication, discipline, and persistence.
  • Workability : We bring clarity to problems. We stay in action. We turn problems into opportunities. We work together and are part of the solution, never part of the problem.

2) A genuine desire to help people by providing as much value to them in your role as you can and a natural enjoyment of the intricacies of tax law should be a part of your DNA. That’s not to suggest that your job is your life (quite the contrary, we are all really well-rounded), but we want people on our team that really enjoy and get fulfilment their professional lives. If your job is a means to an end, that’s ok, but this position is not for you.

Brotman Law is a law firm founded on the principal of doing first class tax work for an exceptional group of clients. We recognize and value the trust that our clients have placed in us and the central importance of what we are doing for them. Our firm is “goal-oriented,” meaning that we are less about resolving just their tax issue and more about resolving the overall objective that the client is trying to achieve. We place great importance in the duty we have to our clients and we hold ourselves to high standards in providing them, not only with intelligent solutions to complex problems, but outstanding client service. We strive to the be the law firm that we would work with if we were in their position and understand that the success of law firm is directly tied to the success of our clients.

3) We are a high performing team in a successful, fast-growing law firm environment, and we all work as individuals to make our team and our firm better. Collaboration on client matters, on firm matters, and just generally in support of each other is what we do. Being in a successful, fast-growing law firm environment definitely has a lot of perks, but we are a place for challenge and growth and not for comfort. We are constantly building, improving, tearing things down, and making them better, which means that not everything works perfectly all the time. Rather, we have gotten comfortable being uncomfortable by dealing with new and increasing challenges that come with client matters and in striving to be better as a team and as a firm. All points of view and efforts to step in to deliver value are acknowledged, appreciated, and rewarded. Plus, we are all very nice people and have a casual, open door office environment that counterbalances the seriousness of what we do.

You will be on the front line, in constant communication with our clients, and actively working each day to solve their problems. The work itself can be demanding, from a technical and sometimes emotional perspective, but there is a great amount of personal and professional satisfaction in what we do. Those who embrace their role and who are willing work toward improving themselves and their clients beyond their normal assigned responsibilities will excel in this role. We want people who are rising stars and for us to be a part of and support them in their journey and where that takes them.

On the flip side, we are not a “burn the midnight oil” type of firm. The hours that you put in, while important to some degree, matter less than quality of your work and your efficiency. We want you doing tasks that are your highest and best use. Having and maintaining standards and honoring your commitments does not equivocate to fourteen-hour days. Does that mean that some days are longer than others? Sure. Do we have busy periods and slower periods? Yes. However, we find it manageable to be able to balance our professional and personal commitments and trust that the person that we bring on will be able to find balance too. Take time off when you are sick, be at your kid’s soccer games, take that vacation when you want to take a vacation, but honor your commitments to your clients and to our team.

4) Every day at our firm is a new adventure . Our caseload focuses on civil and criminal tax issues surrounding businesses, business owners, corporate officers, and high net worth individuals, who make up approximately 95% of our active clients. Although issues generally subdivide into controversy (crisis management), compliance work, and optimization / structuring, there will be a lot of variety among the daily work you will do and the type of client that you do it for. Some people at our firm tend to lean toward one area or another, based on preference and what they are good at, but it is inevitable that you will touch on our all of our different areas of practice. We see ourselves as the client’s chief tax officer and many client matters will touch on each one of the different areas, so we naturally want our associates to develop a range of understanding across the landscape of tax.

If the above sounds like you, we welcome you to apply for the position. If there are things in the above that create anxiety or you are on the fence, then this is probably not the best opportunity for you.

Salary is competitive based on levels of experience (associate : 0-6 years, senior associate : 6 years +) and value that you will be able provide to our clients and our firm.

To apply : Please submit your resume and a brief cover letter, so we can get to know you a little better and why you are interested in the position. Please email this to lawoffice@sambrotman.com with your preferred method of contact.
