Job Summary :
The SOM IS Shared Services team is currently seeking a Senior System Administrator with a primary focus on Windows systems and some experience with Linux. This full-time position is part of the broader systems team and is responsible for the planning, deployment, administration, and support of various research and business systems managed by SOM IS. The selected candidate will also help establish and enforce operational processes and best practices to ensure reliable, stable service delivery.
We're looking for a technically strong professional with a proven track record in customer service and support. The ideal candidate is a driven and collaborative individual who thrives in a fast-paced, high-demand environment and can work effectively across teams to deliver high-quality outcomes.
Key Responsibilities :
Infrastructure and Operations (30%)
Deploy, configure, support, and maintain physical and virtual servers (95% Windows, 5% Linux).
Monitor performance, troubleshoot issues, and identify root causes of production problems.
Assist with database administration tasks (installation, configuration, management, monitoring, optimization, and recovery).
Ensure availability, scalability, and reliability of systems across SOM Information Services.
Security, Compliance, and Data Protection (30%)
Harden servers and applications to meet best security practices and compliance requirements.
Ensure the security and integrity of operating systems, applications, and data.
Develop, test, and maintain system backup and recovery plans.
Create and manage a standardized data permission structure to enforce proper access controls.
Architecture, Planning, and Documentation (30%)
Develop and communicate systems architecture plans aligned with SOM Information Services' goals.
Lead project planning activities, including requirements gathering, estimating, and scheduling.
Document systems portfolio, configurations, and architectures, recommending improvements where needed.
Develop and maintain policies, processes, and procedures for consistent, compliant system operations.
User and Stakeholder Engagement (10%)
Consult with users to gather system requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
Provide software and hardware recommendations to support business and research needs.
Communicate system plans, processes, and standards clearly across teams and stakeholders.
Work Location :
Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications :
Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in computer science, management / computer information systems, computer engineering, information technology, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
Two (2) years of professional experience in an IT role performing the installation, configuration, and support of Windows servers.
Substitution : A combination of education and related technical / military / paraprofessional experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications :
Five or more (5+) years working as a server administrator supporting clinical and higher education customers.
Strong experience with Windows servers and entry-level experience with Ubuntu / RHEL.
Demonstrable experience with Group Policy Objects, PowerShell scripting, and automating computer tasks.
Experience working with common configuration management systems such as SCCM or PDQ.
Experience in managing and maintaining common imaging and software deployment.

Technical Expertise
Advanced knowledge of server administration, including Windows and Linux in production environments.
Experience supporting enterprise-level applications and diverse technology stacks.
Strong technical aptitude with the ability to research and resolve complex issues.
Infrastructure & Systems
Advanced experience with virtual environments, including VMWare and Hyper-V infrastructure.
Experience installing, configuring, and managing all versions of Microsoft SQL Server.
Familiarity with NTFS file share security best practices.
Experience with IIS installation and configuration.
Strong understanding of enterprise network concepts, including Active Directory and group permissions, DNS, and DHCP.
Proficient in protocols and tools relevant to enterprise IT environments.
Monitoring & Security
Experience with log shipping, monitoring, and reporting tools such as SPLUNK, Wazuh, and Exabeam.
Ability to establish and maintain effective, professional working relations with peers, colleagues, clients, including external agencies and organizations.
Strong customer service skills and experience working directly with end-users and stakeholders.

Anticipated Pay Range :
The starting salary range ( or hiring range ) for this position has been established as $68,114 to $86,641.
The above salary range ( or hiring range ) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
