Animal Caretaker - Dog Lead

About the Role The Animal Caretaker – Dog Lead plays a key role in ensuring the daily care, cleanliness, and well-being of the dogs in our shelter.

This position works closely with the leadership, behavior, and medical teams to maintain a safe, positive, and enriching environment for every dog in our care.

Key Responsibilities Clean and sanitize kennels, runs, and common areas daily to maintain high standards of hygiene.

Ensure all dog care staff follow established cleaning, handling, and feeding protocols.

Feed, water, and exercise dogs according to their individual needs and shelter guidelines.

Monitor animals for signs of illness, stress, or behavioral changes and promptly report concerns.

Provide basic grooming, enrichment, and behavioral support under leadership direction.

Support the adoption process by assisting potential adopters and collaborating with volunteers.

Maintain accurate daily records in the shelter software system and assist with inventory restocking.

Contribute to the overall upkeep, safety, and organization of the shelter facility.

Qualifications & Requirements :

• High School diploma or GED / HSE required 1–2 years of experience in an animal shelter preferred Able to lift 40 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks Comfortable working outdoors and around animals / products containing peanuts Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures Excellent communication and teamwork skills Must be professional, courteous, and aligned with the mission of DCSPCA Working Conditions : Frequent bending, kneeling, walking, and standing for extended periods Exposure to animals of various temperaments and outdoor weather conditions Use of cleaning agents and disinfectant solutions Location : Hyde Park, NY Schedule : Our shelter operates from 8 AM to 5 PM, seven days a week (including holidays) to ensure animals receive daily care.
