Roads Maintenance Worker
The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled work in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads, right-of-ways, auxiliary structures, and secondary roads; operate various types of construction equipment in accordance with safety regulations and procedures. Ensures the safe operations of recycling and landfill; weighs vehicles, directs traffic and assists customers at the landfill. Operates trucks, performs cleaning duties and trains new employees. The employee will be assigned to the Roads Division or the Recycling & Landfill Division and will be asked to work in either Division as required on a temporary basis.
This position does not supervise other employees.
Essential duties and responsibilities include :
This position has no responsibility over any types of budget. This position provides project coordination support for road maintenance and landfill maintenance projects.
This position may train colleagues.
This position creates or edits documents, internal memos, timesheets and reports.
Interacts regularly with internal coworkers and other departmental personnel over the telephone, by email, and / or in person. Incidental contact with the public may occur as part of the work location.
Regularly (More than 55% but less than 70% in a year) interacts specifically with customers.
Minimum education required : High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum years of directly related experience required : Two (2) years' experience in road construction and maintenance and operation of related equipment; or two (2) years' experience in landfill operations; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Within three (3) months of employment, the written portion of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) testing must be completed. By the end of nine (9) months, a valid Arizona Class A CDL must be obtained. The probationary period will be met after six (6) months of satisfactory job performance and obtaining the Class A CDL. If the license has not been obtained during the first six (6) months of employment, the probationary period may be extended for an additional three (3) months. If the Class A CDL is not obtained at the end of nine (9) months, the probationary period of employment will be terminated. This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing.
Knowledge required : Customer and personal service; excavation; grading; compaction; traffic control procedures; landfill safety operations and handling of hazardous materials.
Skills required : Skills necessary to perform semi-skilled road construction and maintenance activities and operating heavy equipment, machinery and vehicles. Critical thinking; problem solving; analyzing operations; troubleshooting and time management.
Abilities required : Perform moderately heavy manual labor, safely operate heavy road construction equipment and vehicles; conduct traffic control activities; provides emergency road services in relation to flooding, fires, rockslides and heavy snow; inspect and maintain construction equipment and vehicles; lead and train other personnel. Read and write minimum High School level; solve problems using inductive reasoning; make sense of multiple information; speak clearly and sensibly and maintain calm demeanor in stressful situations.
Physical demands : Occasionally stands to direct traffic, to complete tasks and to attend to reported incidents. Regularly sits to complete reports, routinely sits to operate special equipment. May be required to lift work related materials, equipment, and tools of more than 75 lbs. in weight. Regularly requires dexterity for special gadgets and special machines. Incumbents in this position may be required to routinely walk to and from work sites, occasionally bend, stoop, crawl, kneel and routinely twist.
Work environment : Incumbents in this position constantly perform work at external construction areas : new and maintained County roads, easements, water ways and County landfills.
Safety risk exposure : Incumbents in this position may become exposed to verbal abuse by customers, or citizens; individuals with high level of emotional distress; physical danger, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards; electrical hazards; bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases; fire hazards; explosives, respiratory hazards; extreme temperature; noise and vibration; and wetness and humidity.
Protective gear & safety manuals : Incumbents in this position are required to constantly follow written safety procedures and manuals relevant to the division or department; constantly requires safety foot wear, hearing protection devices, eye protection devices and hard hat.
Consequences of error : Potential errors can result in unfavorable public perceptions and legal ramifications.
