Must-Have : Knowledge of current hospital and departmental standards for the handling of pharmaceuticals.
Description :
To assist the pharmacist in the preparation and perform activities related to the repackaging and compounding, filling, and delivery of medications.
Complete other tasks associated with dispensing in a manner developmentally appropriate for the ages of patients served (0-adult).
Assist in the procurement, record keeping, storage, and distribution of all controlled substances.
Assist the pharmacist in ensuring the appropriateness of all medication doses by correctly entering patient diagnosis, weight, allergies, and body surface area in the computer.
Follow aseptic technique and infection control in the preparation of sterile products.
Complete annual recertification and score at least 90% on the aseptic technique / infection control skills and written exam as documented by a qualified observer.
Insist that other technicians and pharmacists practice aseptic technique and infection control.
Ensure the medications prepared are correct as verified by the pharmacist and as documented by a lack of dispensing errors.
Demonstrate competence at batch / medication / prescription order entry.
Work with Pharmacy Support Services personnel to maintain adequate stock of medications and supplies.
Follow procedures established for stock replacement.
Follow nonformulary procedures.
Obtain pharmacist initial / final checks and assign dilution and expiration dating labels to medications according to department standards.
Demonstrate strong math and reading skills as well as good communication skills.
Be able to operate equipment used in the preparation of sterile products.
Be responsible for maintaining stockouts and replenishing omnicells on various nursing floors.
Rotate stock and remove soon-to-expire medications.
Restock anesthesia machines including controlled substances.
Repack and compound medications weekly.
