Position Summary
The General Manager is responsible for the full operation of the hotel and all outlets, including hotel operations, food and beverage, sales, engineering, human resources and accounting. The General Manager is expected to meet all company standards and lead the 5 Key Drivers identified by the management company.
Overview
The General Manager role at Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Del Mar / Solana Beach is responsible for leading all aspects of hotel operations at this select-service, coastal property, ensuring exceptional guest experiences, strong financial performance, and operational excellence. This role requires a hands-on leader with deep market knowledge of North County San Diego, a customer service-centric mindset, and proven success in managing P&L to drive profitability. The GM must demonstrate confidence and professionalism in presenting to corporate teams and ownership, including navigating high-touch owner relations with frequent, unannounced site visits. A strong focus on team development, brand compliance, and community engagement is essential to the success of this role.
Core Responsibilities
- Practice a culture of guest service in all you do; promote courtesy, good will and a positive attitude in each and every encounter.
- Anticipate guest needs, respond promptly and acknowledge all guests, maintaining positive guest relations at all times.
- Resolve guest complaints, ensuring guest satisfaction in each interaction.
- Coordinate special programs, functions and incentives to improve guest service.
- Work in a cooperative and friendly manner with fellow associates.
- Effectively lead the Executive Committee to reach the goals of the property.
- Develop and assure achievement of hotel revenues and profits, utilizing forecasting, P&L management, RevPAR.
- Ensure the property is compliant in all departments, growing the business year over year.
- Ensure product quality is of a level to allow future bookings of room nights, banquet sales and food & beverage to achieve increasing pricing goals as warranted to maximize revenue.
- Coach and develop leaders to exceed performance expectations.
Required Experience & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Hotel Management or related business field preferredMinimum five (5) years of experience as a General Manager in a branded hotel environmentStrong understanding of P&L (Profit & Loss) control —the ability to manage and optimize the hotel’s income and expenses to ensure profitability. This includes :
Analyzing revenue streams and expense categoriesIdentifying financial trends and variancesMaking strategic decisions to improve marginsCommunicating financial performance clearly and confidently in meetings and reportsProven ability to read, interpret, and present financial data to stakeholders, including ownership groups, corporate leadership, and subject matter expertsDemonstrated success in cost control and expense managementPerformance management & accountability : Skilled in driving team accountability for financial and operational results through clear expectations, consistent follow-through, and data-informed decision-making.Experience leading multi-departmental teams and managing day-to-day hotel operationsExcellent verbal and written communication skillsProficiency in Microsoft Office SuiteKnowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulationsPreferred Qualifications
Hotel Leadership Experience : Extensive experience as a General Manager, ideally holding the GM title for five (5) or more consecutive years in "Select Service" branded hotel, ideally Marriott or Hilton.Exceptional P&L control and financial acumen : with the ability to analyze revenue and expenses, identify trends, and make strategic decisions to improve profitability—while confidently presenting financial performance to ownership groups, corporate teams, and stakeholders.Owner relations : Experienced managing highly engaged ownership groups with frequent, unannounced site visits; consistently communicates property performance with professionalism, transparency and confidence.Operational Expertise : Deep understanding of select-service hotel operations, including front office, housekeeping, maintenance, and food & beverage.Hands-On Management Style : Willingness to be actively involved in daily operations and lead by example.Leadership & Team Development : Strong leadership skills with experience recruiting, training, and motivating high-performing teams.Communication & Collaboration : Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage with guests, staff, vendors, and ownership.Brand Compliance : Familiarity with Marriott brand standards and ability to ensure consistent execution across all departments.Market knowledge for Courtyard Solana Beach : Understanding the property's position within the coastal North County San Diego hotel market, including :
