Firefighter

Perform protective service work in driving fire apparatus, operation of pumps, fire suppression, medical first aid, and rescue operations.

Essential Job Duties

  • Respond and drive fire apparatus to fire alarms and other calls for service.
  • Force entry to premises for firefighting.
  • Operate pumps and apparatus and regulate water pressure to insure required pressure at the nozzle.
  • Perform rescue operations and administer first-aid to injured persons.
  • Perform salvage operations such as sweeping water, throwing covers, removing debris, etc.
  • Perform ventilation operations.
  • Participate in fire drills.
  • Attend training classes in firefighting, first-aid, and other related subjects.
  • Perform general fire inspections and conduct residential and commercial fire prevention inspections.
  • Assists shift officers with training of personnel.

Other Job Duties

  • Perform general maintenance and service work on fire department property and equipment, including cleaning walls and floors, washing windows, mowing yards, and making minor repairs.
  • Attend annual in-service training of 40 hours.
  • Serve as acting officer-in-charge in the absence of the Lieutenant or Captain.
  • Perform related tasks as required.
  • Subject to call out for fires suppression when off duty.

    • Primary Job Challenges

  • Working indoors and outdoors, regardless of the weather, and will sit, stand, climb, walk, crawl, bend, stoop, and lift light and heavy objects (more than 50 pounds).
  • Exposure to high places, extreme heat and cold, smoke, hazardous chemicals, dangerous machinery, and falling objects.
  • Reacting quickly and calmly in emergency situations and determine the proper course of action.
  • Performing hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve extreme exertion in cramped and smoke-filled surroundings.

    • Equipment Operated

  • Fire apparatus including engines, rescue truck, and aerial device.
  • Firefighting equipment to include nozzles, hoses, self-contained breathing apparatus, power tools, generators, ladders, ropes, various hand tools, extrication equipment, fire extinguishers, repelling equipment, ventilation equipment, hazardous materials equipment, forcible entry equipment, cascade system, cribbing, and radios.
  • Lawn care equipment, cleaning equipment including mops, brooms, and a variety of standard office equipment including copiers, telephones, computers and fax machines.

    • Key Competencies Required

  • Thorough knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression.
  • Thorough knowledge of fire prevention strategies and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the city.
  • Thorough knowledge of medical and rescue techniques.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations regarding fire suppression, hazardous materials, and traffic laws.
  • Ability to operate and maintain all firefighting equipment and apparatus in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ability to keep basic records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform extremely strenuous and physical labor for extended periods of time under unfavorable climatic conditions.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Ability to identify hazardous materials.
  • Ability to physically and mentally climb to different heights and function in close quarters.
  • Ability to wear heavy protective clothing for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to learn to operate a variety of firefighting equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees and the public.

    • Qualifications

    Education and experience : Graduation from a standard high school or GED with a minimum one year of full-time service with the City of Springfield Fire Department; or a minimum of three (3) years' experience as a firefighter with another career full-time department; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the required knowledge and abilities.

    Required certifications / licenses : Must possess a valid Class D driver license issued by the State of Tennessee and the following :

  • 16-Hour Introduction to Fire and Emergency Services certification.
  • 64-Hour Basic Firefighting certification.
  • FEMA Incident Command System certifications IS-100, 200, 700, and 800.
  • Firefighter I Live Burn certification.
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certification from the Tennessee Commission on Firefighting.
  • Firefighter I certification from the Tennessee Commission on Fire Fighting (TCFF).
  • CPR certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Vehicle Extrication certification.
  • Firefighter II Live Burn certification.
  • Firefighter II certification from the Tennessee Commission on Firefighting.
  • Emergency Medical Responder license or above from the State of Tennessee.

    • Must pass a physical examination, drug screening, and background check given by the city's designated representative
