Work Schedule : Monday - Friday, 0700 1600 or 0730 1630 (9-hour shift including a 1-hour unpaid lunch).
Qualifications :
Education :High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Completion of a formal Orthopedic Technician training program preferred.
- Experience :
Minimum of 1 year of experience as an Orthopedic Technician within the last 3 years in a hospital or clinic setting.
- Experience performing orthopedic support functions such as applying and removing casts, splints, traction devices, and braces.
- Prior experience assisting orthopedic physicians or surgeons in clinical or surgical settings is preferred.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and orthopedic supply management.
- License / Certification :
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the AHA or American Red Cross is required.
- Certification as an Orthopedic Technologist (OTC) by ASOP, NBCOT, or equivalent.
Responsibilities :
- Assist orthopedic physicians in examining and treating patients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.
- Apply, adjust, and remove various types of orthopedic casts, splints, braces, and traction devices in accordance with physician orders and hospital protocols.
- Monitor patients for signs of impaired circulation, pressure areas, or complications related to immobilization devices, reporting findings promptly.
- Instruct patients and caregivers on the proper care and use of orthopedic appliances, splints, and casts.
- Assist with dressing changes, wound care, and suture removal when required.
- Perform front-desk duties as needed, including answering phones, taking messages, and coordinating patient flow.
- Schedule and confirm pre-operative and post-operative appointments; coordinate with radiology and surgery departments for imaging and surgical scheduling.
- Prepare and maintain accurate patient documentation, including scanning and uploading records into the electronic medical record system (AHLTA or MHS GENESIS).
- Maintain orthopedic supply inventory, ensuring all materials and equipment are properly cleaned, stocked, and serviceable.
- Assemble and prepare surgical equipment and orthopedic trays for procedures as directed.
- Prepare surgical packets and documentation for joint cases, cancellations, or rescheduled cases.
- Coordinate with hospital staff to ensure pre-operative testing and imaging are completed.
- Ensure adherence to infection control standards, HIPAA, and safety protocols.
- Participate in competency-based training and maintain documentation of annual skill validation.
- Support continuous quality improvement efforts within the orthopedic department.
