School Bus Driver
Reports To : Transportation Supervisor
Job Goal : To provide support to drivers so that they can safely operate school system vehicles and to transport students, employees and designated persons for the effective operation of school system programs and activities
Qualifications :
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Alabama CDL and school bus driver's license required
- Must meet all local, state, and federal licensing requirements and regulations required to operate a school bus and automobile
- Must pass and is subject to drug tests as required by federal and state law and the Board's policies regarding drug testing, operating system-owned vehicles, transporting students and all applicable policies
- Must have an acceptable motor vehicle record
- Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and state Board of Education regulations
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Ability to operate a school vehicle safely over an assigned route according to a definite time schedule which may require driving during pre-daylight and dusk periodsAbility to operate a school vehicle in compliance with all traffic and safety laws and regulations, including defensive driving habits and posted speed limitsPhysical dexterity, coordination, mobility, and visual acuity to safely operate a school bus or other system-owned vehiclePerformance Responsibilities :
Adheres to all traffic lawsPerforms required pre-trip inspections according to state-mandated guidelinesObserves all mandatory safety regulations for school busesMaintains discipline when students are on the busReports to the proper authority students with discipline problemsTransports students to and from schoolTransports students on field trips and outings, athletic events, and other extracurricular or co-curricular events, often in the evening and at night as assignedPrepares for and assists students in evacuating the bus and to transport safety / first-aid equipment to care for injuriesMaintains safety precautions when students are boarding and departing busesReports all accidents immediately to the transportation office and other appropriate officialsAttends periodic safety meetings and trainingAccurately keeps and submits monthly route reports and daily pre-trip inspection reportsKeeps the bus clean and orderly dailyIdentifies needs and arranges for necessary repairs and maintenance workRegulates heating, cooling and ventilation equipment provided on the bus for the comfort and safety of the passengersKeeps to the assigned schedule and discharges students only at authorized stopsNotifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or latenessExercises responsible leadership when on out-of-town school tripsTransports only authorized personsMaintains and uses communications or video surveillance equipment on buses according to school system policies and regulationsMaintains cooperative and appropriate relationships with students, parents, community members and other employeesAdheres to school system rules and regulations regarding bus pick up, return, storage and use during non-route timesEnforces regulations against smoking and eating on the busNotifies immediate supervisor of absencesPerforms job-related duties as assigned by supervisorPhysical Requirements :
Medium Work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and / or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.
Evaluation : Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
