Overview
Southfield School in Shreveport, Louisiana, seeks an experienced professional to serve as the school’s library media specialist in grades Preschool-2 through 8th grade. Qualified candidates should have at least a bachelor’s degree in education (or a closely related field) with a current certification.
Role Description
In the role of school library media specialist, you will be responsible for cultivating a love of reading, supporting information literacy, and integrating library resources into the school’s curriculum. You will manage the day-to-day operations of the library while teaching regular classes and collaborating with faculty to support student learning through literature, research skills, and digital citizenship. You will also be asked to participate on school-wide committees and to attend functions occasionally beyond school hours.
Primary Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of child development.
- Support the school’s mission and culture in encouraging each child’s lifelong love of learning.
- Design and deliver engaging library and media literacy lessons for grades PS-2 through 8.
- Foster a love of reading through read-alouds, book talks, author studies, and reading programs.
- Teach research and information literacy skills appropriate to development levels, including citation and responsible use of sources.
- Manage the school’s library collection, including selection, cataloging, maintenance, and weeding of materials.
- Oversee the circulation system and maintain an accurate inventory of books and materials.
- Curate a diverse and inclusive collection that reflects the interests, identities, and needs of all students.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate literature and research into all subject areas.
- Organize book fairs, author visits, parent book club, and Southfield bookmark contests.
- Communicate regularly with students and families about library happenings and reading recommendations.
- Create a classroom culture that fosters a secure, student-centered environment, promotes a challenging rigor, and develops each student’s self-confidence and integrity.
- Have a willingness to share knowledge and experiences with others, helping colleagues and students reach their goals while honoring differences of perspectives, values, and opinions.
- Actively create networks with colleagues, other schools, and professional organizations to grow knowledge and demonstrate lifelong learning.
- Respond to families in a timely manner and share important details and information throughout the year.
- Be committed to self-reflection to evaluate instruction, assessment, and professional responsibilities, and explore new ideas and pedagogical practices that enhance the student experience.
- Adhere to the school’s expectations regarding punctuality, timeliness, dress code, and confidentiality while contributing to the school’s life beyond the instructional role.
