Must-Have : Strong knowledge in MedSurg, Infectious Disease, Isolation precautions

Description :

Unit has 18 private rooms due to infectious diseases.

Patient ratios are typically 1 : 5-6, or 1 : 4 if COVID positive.

Staffing usually includes 3-4 RNs per shift.

BLS certification is the only required certification.

Common patient diagnoses include a range of infectious diseases, isolation cases, COVID, MRSA, and C-Diff.

RNs are not required to titrate cardiac drips.

Common titratable and set rate drips include Heparin and standard MedSurg IV medications, as well as antibiotics.

There is a Charge Nurse available 24 / 7.

Day charge may take patients if necessary, while night charge will have a full patient assignment.

Each shift includes 2 CNA's.

No vent assistance is provided; however, patients may be on CPAP, BiPAP, or high flow, managed by respiratory therapy.

Remote telemetry support is available; RNs do not need to read or interpret strips.

Shifts are 12 hours, either 0700-1930 or 1900-0730, with a 30-minute lunch break.

Permanent staff can self-schedule, while travelers will be scheduled based on unit needs.

Block scheduling is permitted as long as unit requirements are met.

Travelers are expected to work every other weekend.

Weekend shifts for nights are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Holiday requirements depend on unit needs; travelers may be expected to work holidays if permanent staff is insufficient.

Floating is required to any MedSurg units; travelers will float first.

If floated to telemetry, patients will be assigned within the nurse’s skill set.

Scrub color is royal blue; scrub jackets, if worn, must also be royal blue.

Unit-specific orientation lasts for one day, followed by one day of floor orientation with a preceptor, and then the third day will be independent.

Cancellation policy allows for two shifts to be canceled per assignment of 13 weeks and one for shorter assignments.

Charting is done through Epic.
