Examples of Duties

Police officers perform various duties including :

• Performing security patrols, traffic control, investigation, and providing basic first aid at medical emergencies
• Detection, investigation, and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct
• Working an assigned shift with minimal supervision and handling difficult and emergency situations
• Maintaining availability for consultation on major emergencies or incidents
• Carrying out duties in conformance with federal, state, county, and city laws
• Interrogating suspects, witnesses, and drivers, and preserving evidence
• Conducting follow-up investigations of crimes and preparing cases for testimony
• Preparing various reports and undertaking community-oriented police work
• Coordinating activities with other officers and departments, and obtaining advice from legal authorities
• Maintaining knowledge of laws and procedures to ensure legally-accepted practices
• Communicating effectively in making oral or written reports
• Developing and maintaining a cooperative work environment
• Maintaining departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities
