Pfizer Oncology Scientific Communications Team Lead
Today, Pfizer Oncology has an industry-leading portfolio of approved innovative cancer medicines, including major therapies for metastatic breast cancer, genitourinary cancers, thoracic, and hematologic malignancies complemented by an extensive pipeline of over 50 programs in clinical development.
Role Summary
The Scientific Communications Team Lead will report to the Head of Oncology Scientific Communications in the Medical Strategy Management organization of Pfizer Oncology Medical. This role will be accountable for ensuring the development and execution of impactful scientific communication strategies for Pfizer Oncology, encompassing both above-brand and Therapeutic Area (TA)-specific initiatives. The Team Lead will oversee a team of professionals who create high-impact scientific content across various channels, including publications, congresses, field medical tools, and digital platforms. This role ensures alignment with overarching brand and therapeutic strategies, collaborating closely with stakeholders across Pfizer Oncology and the wider Pfizer enterprise.
Role Responsibilities
This role demands a strategic thinker with a strong understanding of the evolving scientific landscape, medical affairs best practices, the nuances of brand communication, and the needs of diverse stakeholders, both internal and external. Specific responsibilities and accountabilities include managing team members who :
- Provide strategic oversight for the continuum of scientific communication activities and the overarching scientific narrative, ensuring strategic alignment and excellence in delivery.
- Identify requirements for SCP above brand and TA-specific content and ensure SCP content is contemporaneous by leading regular gap analyses to identify medical / scientific communication needs and opportunities and working with Pfizer US (Medical Platforms) to execute.
- Accountable for ensuring the development and delivery of TA, asset, and above-asset specific publication strategies, encompassing all stages from planning and conceptualization to production and dissemination.
- Accountable for leading engagement with CMO enablement platforms and other enterprise stakeholders (including regional / local teams) as needed to ensure that channel-specific communications strategies and plans are developed, delivered, and reflective of Pfizer Oncology TA and above brand teams' and Field Medical needs.
- Strategic advisor to their medical teams, providing cross-functional guidance and subject matter expertise to foster the creation of effective scientific communication tools, content, and other Scientific Communication deliverables, contributing to the successful development and education of Oncology assets.
- Accountable for ensuring Field Medical content execution is aligned with global content strategy across Global / US and International Medical Affairs.
- Work closely with clinical study teams during data readouts to determine key messages and publication content (aligned to overall publication strategy and SCP).
- Ensure updates occur as needed on a regular basis in co-ordination with key cross-functional stakeholders, including commercial and Medical TA teams and platforms. This includes but not limited to global publication plans, global congress strategy and content, GMAT on the progress of the overarching publication plan delivery and its continued alignment with the SCP.
- Deliver internal communications around new scientific and clinical data on medicines and disease areas of interest, coordinating content with medical agencies as appropriate. Ensure appropriate internal communications pre-and post- congress on key Pfizer and competitor data.
- As required, participate in, lead and / or represent above-brand and TA-specific Pfizer Oncology partnerships, alliances, or other external initiatives.
- Partner with the Oncology Scientific Affairs Lead to represent scientific communications strategies portfolio and pipeline for senior internal audiences; as well as support GPTs, Global Medical franchises, and other Pfizer Oncology stakeholders in engaging with the external medical community on publication activities related to key clinical trial data readouts, as well as communications for non-medical audiences e.g., Board, Investor Relations, etc.
In addition to the above, the Team Lead will also serve as a Functional Leader in one of three chosen capabilities, where they contribute directly to the development and execution of SOPS, process and high-level strategies, leveraging deep expertise in scientific communications and Oncology landscape. The functional capabilities include :
Congress : Serve as the lead for Congress end-to-end activities within Oncology Scientific Communications, establishing best practices, developing SOPs, and providing guidance on congress strategy planning and execution. Example responsibilities may include : leading / participating in cross-functional Congress Steering Committee to develop congress engagement plan and participation based on impact; connecting congress priorities and communication needs from cross-functional stakeholders (i.e., GMT, Oncology Medical, Field Medical, International Medical Affairs, CMO execution teams, external stakeholders, etc.) and being a thought partner to the Head of Medical Strategy Management and other senior leaders on optimizing Pfizer Oncology's presence and impact at key congresses.Content : Serve as the lead for Content development within Oncology Scientific Communications, setting content strategy, ensuring quality and consistency across materials, and driving innovation in scientific storytelling. Example responsibilities of the team may include supporting annual operating plan development for content plans within therapeutic area, including accountability for all content-related budgets and management according to portfolio priorities; optimizing content development to ensure delivery of effective medical engagement strategies across the Pfizer portfolio; and defining and delivering TA training content.Data Disclosure : Serve as the Lead for Data Disclosure within Oncology Scientific Communications, overseeing publication strategy, planning, reporting, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and maximizing the impact of scientific data dissemination.Basic Qualifications
Biopharmaceutical / biotech or agency experience (such as Medical Communications, Medical Affairs, or scientific communication within Clinical Development roles).Relevant experience required : BA / BS with 15+ years of experience, MBA / MSc with 13+ years of experience, PharmD / PhD with 8+ years of experience, MD with 5+ years of experience.5+ years' experience in Medical Affairs / Scientific Communications or Publications Agency as a content developerProven track record of leading and managing successful Scientific Communications teams within the pharmaceutical industry, with a strong understanding of Oncology-specific communication challenges and best practices across a variety of channels (such as journals, plain language summaries, Congress materials, publication extenders, podcasts, and short-form articles for 3rd party digital platforms).Experience developing strategic scientific communications and other scientific content to support scientific exchange, including the use of tools and programs to meet the needs of HCPs.Diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including :Experience working in a highly regulated environment and delivering scientific content in a compliant yet innovative manner, leveraging the latest technologies to ease the consumption of critical scientific information.The ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop, and coach others, oversee, and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.The ability to quickly build rapport and credibility with key internal and key external stakeholders through strong interpersonal skills.Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific concepts and data into meaningful and digestible communications and foundational tools that can be utilized via multiple channels including at scientific conferences.Preferred Qualifications
Advanced medical / scientific degree (MS, PhD, PharmD) desirable5+ years' experience in Medical Affairs / Scientific Communications or Publications Agency as a content developerCandidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including : the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $219,800.00 to $366,400.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer's Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 25.0% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
