Job Summary

Inpatient Genetic Counselor with the University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz (Denver, CO). The Department of Pediatrics (DOP) seeks an accomplished and experienced professional to serve as Inpatient Genetic Counselor (GC). This position supports the clinical activities of the Inpatient Genetics and Metabolism Service and provides independent genetic counseling in support of genetic and molecular testing requested by other specialties for inpatients at CHCO. The role includes teaching and supervision of trainees. On a regular basis, the GC will meet with families of patients who have died to provide support and counseling around postmortem testing results. Engage in teaching (5% of effort) and genetic counseling (95% of time) within the Department of Pediatrics, Genetics, and Metabolism. Roles include teaching in courses such as GENC 6150 Congenital Malformations and Disorders of the Newborn and GENC 6211 Professional Issues in Genetic Counseling II; participate in education of residents, medical students, pediatric residents, and genetic counseling students; supervise Master's students, Medical Genetics Residents, and Fellows on the Inpatient Rotation; provide guidance on testing and results interpretation to enhance top-of-scope practice; coordinate and facilitate testing for optimal patient care in the inpatient setting; provide inpatient genetic counseling to patients with known or suspected genetic disorders and inborn errors of metabolism; provide nondirective counseling to patients and families; and provide follow-up counseling for discharged families and families of deceased infants and children.

Responsibilities

  • Provide inpatient genetic counseling and testing coordination for the Inpatient Genetics and Metabolism Service and for inpatients across specialties.
  • Teach and supervise trainees, including bedside teaching around time of child demise, communication of results in intensive care settings, pedigree analysis, and collection of family history.
  • Develop and present educational information to patients and professionals.
  • Enhance the Pediatric Genetics Inpatient Service by providing genetic counseling expertise and guidance in testing and interpretation of results.
  • Coordinate rapid testing options and ensure care is aligned with top-of-scope practice for medical providers.
  • Deliver nondirective counseling and follow-up care for discharged and bereaved families.

Work Location

Onsite – this role is located in Denver, Colorado.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications : Master's degree in Genetic Counseling and 3 years of experience as a Genetic Counselor. ABGC Board certification required.
