The job description includes undergoing a 20-week / 868-hour curriculum of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) academy activities including classroom instruction, assignments, physical training, and non-sworn law enforcement activities in various areas such as traffic enforcement, narcotics investigation, crime scene processing, community affairs, law, investigations, crime prevention, and other specialties.
The North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission mandates the topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic and alcohol beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations.
Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study, the POPAT (Police Officer Physical Abilities Test) course, and the state certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission to receive a certificate. Upon successful completion of BLET, students can earn up to 23 credit hours toward an A.A.S. degree in Criminal Justice Technology.
Upon successful completion of the BLET certification course, individuals are eligible for promotion to a role as a sworn police officer for the Town of Huntersville, contingent on additional field training.

This position's physical requirements involve very heavy work which requires occasionally exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required : balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and / or walking. Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), and bloodborne pathogens, and may require wearing specialized personal protective equipment. Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
