Reporting to the Technical Manager, the Principal Application Scientist will be responsible for applications research and development supporting existing and developing businesses within the Formulated Adhesive segment related to polymers, adhesives and tackifier resins. This involves direct customer engagement in developing new opportunities and working with sales and account managers to create and deliver business strategies. The role includes translating market needs into product concepts and developing these concepts into commercial products. The candidate should communicate effectively and work well in an innovative, fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
The ideal candidate will have broad experience in hotmelt adhesive applications (e.g., hygiene and assembly markets) and a knowledge of structure / property relationships and their impact on final application performance.
Responsibilities
- Lead application development with focus on hotmelt applications and related markets (e.g., hygiene, automotive, assembly, and other durable assembly markets).
- Understand the functional attributes of a wide range of polymers, adhesives and tackifier resins.
- Translate fundamental knowledge into new applications and identify new market platforms.
- Understand customer and end-user requirements and testing procedures to determine how Synthomer products can enhance adhesive performance.
- Provide customers with product recommendations, samples, technical and product details to support evaluation of Synthomer products.
- Provide customers with understanding of the Adhesive Solutions portfolio via training, conferences, tradeshows, and customer site visits.
- Collaborate with marketing and sales on prospect mining and identification of new accounts, including travel for joint customer visits and preparation for calls and presentations.
- Maintain contact with existing and prospective customers through various communication channels.
- Manage innovation project opportunity pipeline through Salesforce (SFDC).
- Collaborate with manufacturing and quality control to ensure product performance and drive new product development.
- Stay current on industry developments and advancements related to the product line.
- Prepare technical presentations, brochures and supporting literature for customer engagement.
- Represent the company at industry events and other forums.
Qualifications
Master's degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Material Science or Engineering or related field; PhD preferred.Minimum of ten years of industrial experience in the adhesives or polymers industries.Strong knowledge of structure-property relationships, polymer physics, characterization, mechanics of materials and polymer testing.Excellent customer interface and communication skills; ability to translate customer needs into application specifications.High initiative and self-motivation; ability to translate unmet needs into differentiated products or new applications.Ability to translate ideas into detailed technical work plans for execution by a technician team.Excellent oral and written communication skills with customers and internal partners.Strong leadership in project management, cross-functional teamwork and cross-region collaboration.Proficient in MS Office; CRM and planning tools (e.g., Salesforce, SAP preferred).Valid driver's license and ability to travel up to 20% domestically and internationally on short notice.Preferred Skills
Knowledge of polyolefins used in hotmelt adhesives is preferred.Good understanding of adhesive markets including formulated adhesives, construction, and tape / label markets.Ability to work in a team and connect seemingly unrelated information.Working knowledge of Design of Experiment (DoE) and practical experience with statistical software (e.g., JMP, Minitab, Design Expert).Why Synthomer?
