Overview
Public Library Technical Services Assistant
Perform specialized administrative and paraprofessional library tasks providing support to the basic services of the library and processing all library materials, with a focus on Technical Services.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Process materials to make them shelf-ready, including spine labels, property labels, warning labels, property stamps, cases and book jacket covers.
- Perform circulation desk duties including operation of ILS system, reader advisory, providing computer assistance to patrons, shelving and supporting resource sharing.
- Receive and distribute mail, FedEx and UPS deliveries, including all collection development materials for the library collection.
- Assist in weeding and discarding to include stamping, removal of pockets and scanning materials into working buckets.
- Maintain department supply inventory, delivery documentation, ordering, organizing and distributing supplies.
- Repair and maintain damaged library materials as directed by supervisor, including gluing, book jackets and cleaning CDs and DVDs.
- Support programming to include display and shelf-reading of materials.
- Maintain records of memorial and gift donations to the library; generate thank you notes and other required correspondence to complete memorial / gift transactions.
- Provide guidance to library users on library policies and procedures.
- Assist with minor installations, troubleshooting and maintenance of library computers.
- Perform special projects as assigned by supervisor and Library Director.
- Process overdues and maintain associated records.
- Works weekend rotation.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education And / or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one or more years of experience in a variety of library functional areas including paraprofessional library work or an equivalent combination of education and / or experience.
Preferred
Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college, university or technical school in Library Science, Computer Science; or related degree.
Special Requirements
Valid North Carolina Driver's License with acceptable driving record.

Work is generally light, with the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently. Physical requirements include stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling and repetitive motions. Visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, operate a computer and other equipment; ability to observe surroundings. Vocal communication and hearing required for normal conversation.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office with a controlled environment. Position may require working after hours and on weekends.
