Stony Brook University is hiring : Chief Audio Engineer in Stony Brook

Overview Stony Brook University is seeking a full-time Chief Audio / Video Engineer to join the Music Department. This role supports faculty and students in audio / video recording, live streaming, concert production, and education. The engineer leads recording and streaming of major concerts and faculty events, supervises graduate assistants, and helps shape the department’s future growth.

Responsibilities Record and live-stream major departmental ensemble concerts in Recital Hall and Main Stage, and faculty concerts.

Train and supervise recording TAs and interns to record other concerts, including Final DMA Recitals and Composers Concerts; post-produce concerts and train TAs to post-produce for archival purposes.

Maintain and / or upgrade recording and streaming equipment in the Recital Hall, Main Stage, and Music Department spaces; maintain audio / video equipment for Recital Hall concerts.

Maintain and improve analog and digital multi-user studios, including Buchla / Moog / synths, reel-to-reel, multi-channel / ambisonics systems, and the recording studio; repair and advise on replacement of equipment.

Advise on equipment replacement; plan purchases with faculty; install new equipment; catalog and oversee inventory of 200+ audio / video items.

Collaborate with the Music Department Concert Manager and TAs to provide equipment for concerts (including occasional off-campus events); oversee TA assignments for equipment operation.

Hold workshops for performance students on recording techniques; develop protocols for student self-recording of non-final degree recitals; assist faculty and students with live electronic and recording projects.

Additional duties or projects as appropriate to rank and department mission.

Qualifications Required Qualifications Master’s degree (foreign equivalent) or higher. In lieu of a Master’s, a Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent) and two years of practical work experience in recording and live sound engineering may be considered; three years of practical work experience in recording and live sound engineering; production experience in academic or professional settings.

Working knowledge of audio / video recording hardware and software.

Experience with live-streaming and video-editing; experience with audio / video engineering for live concerts (amplification, signal processing, playback, multimedia coordination).

Experience supervising staff.

Ability to remain stationary for long periods and frequently move audio visual equipment up to 25 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications Professional Certificate or degrees in Audio Engineering, Video Production, Sound Recording Technology, or Music (foreign equivalents acceptable); additional years of relevant experience in recording and live audio / video engineering.

Experience with live event production; troubleshooting and / or repair of audio and video equipment and analog audio equipment; experience creating video production assets; broad knowledge of Western Classical and Contemporary Music.

Special Notes This is a full-time, FLSA Exempt position; overtime not eligible. Minimum salary threshold applies for exemption.

Eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay (paid biweekly).
