About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to lead clinical operations across a growing network of outpatient orthopedic clinics and surgery centers.

The CMO will oversee physicians, surgeons, and clinical directors while building the systems, policies, and culture that ensure accurate diagnoses, effective interventions, and exceptional outcomes. This is a pivotal executive role for a physician-leader who thrives on improving quality of care at scale.

Currently operating in 4 states, the group is expanding to 24 markets nationwide. The CMO will play a critical role in guiding this growth while maintaining a patient-first culture and developing the next generation of clinical leaders.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Oversight

  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for all clinical operations across multiple sites.
  • Ensure providers deliver timely, accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans.
  • Promote a culture of clinical excellence, safety, and accountability.

Team Management & Talent Development

  • Lead and mentor Clinical Directors, surgeons, and physicians.
  • Build a high-performing, team-based clinical culture.
  • Identify and develop future leaders among both physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Doctor-Patient Relationship & Outcomes

  • Champion the physician-patient partnership as the foundation of effective care.
  • Ensure treatment decisions are collaborative and patient-centered.
  • Drive excellent clinical outcomes and individualized care for every patient.
  • Documentation & Technology

  • Oversee accurate, thorough documentation within NextGen EHR.
  • Leverage technology such as ambient AI assistants to improve provider efficiency.
  • Standardize documentation practices for quality, continuity, and compliance.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with business and operations leaders to align clinical care with enterprise-wide goals.
  • Contribute clinical expertise to new service lines, patient experience strategies, and growth planning.
  • Operational & Equipment Oversight

  • Ensure all medical equipment (MRI, X-ray, C-arm, hyperbaric chambers, CT, etc.) is safe, effective, and ready for use.
  • Partner with operations to maintain the highest standards of readiness and safety.
  • Performance & Continuous Improvement

  • Define, track, and improve KPIs for quality, safety, documentation, and patient satisfaction.
  • Use data to identify opportunities for provider coaching and process improvement.
  • Drive consistency and excellence in the patient experience across all markets.
  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Provider scheduling and capacity alignment.
  • Ongoing skills monitoring and training compliance.
  • Clinical quality, productivity, and satisfaction benchmarks.
  • Documentation, coding, and charge capture accuracy.
  • Provider relationship management and engagement.
  • Qualifications

  • M.D. or D.O. with an active and unrestricted medical license.
  • 10+ years of clinical experience, with 5+ years in senior leadership.
  • Proven success leading multi-site clinical operations and improving outcomes at scale.
  • Experience mentoring physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Strong knowledge of EHR platforms (NextGen preferred) and technology adoption.
  • Familiarity with orthopedic models of care preferred.
  • Background in healthcare scaling, private practice growth, or partnership models is a strong plus.
