Overview
Structural Analyst II - New Glenn Payload Accommodations at Blue Origin. This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a heavy-lift launch vehicle. The candidate will contribute to structural analysis for high-rate builds of New Glenn's composite payload fairing, payload adapter, and related structures. The position requires on-site presence and collaboration with design, manufacturing, and mission integration teams.
Responsibilities
- Complete hand calculations and FEM analysis to report margins of safety for primary and secondary aerospace structures
- Document stress analysis to support nonconformance resolution, design upgrades, and design analysis cycles (loads, modeling, assumptions, etc.)
- Provide guidance on repair methods and analytical practices for both composite and metallic structures
- Support designers with stress, stability, and failure analysis and best practices
- Improve enterprise analysis capabilities, including process automation tools for model creation, strength checks, and analysis report generation
- Collaborate with internal and external teams throughout design, manufacturing, and mission integration
- Support cross-organizational teams with input for production activities and configuration development
- Must be onsite daily and available to support production shifts
Minimum Qualifications
B.S. degree in engineering (M.S. preferred) and 3+ years of experience with aircraft, spacecraft, launch vehicle structures, or automotiveUnderstanding of FEM techniques (boundary conditions & constraints, bolted connections, contact, verification methods, etc.)Basic proficiency with one or more analysis codes (Optistruct preferred, Nastran, Ansys, Abaqus, LS-Dyna)Basic proficiency with Altair HyperworksKnowledge of aerospace and / or launch vehicle structural requirementsFree-body diagrams for internal and reaction load derivationFamiliarity with classical aerospace sizing methods (e.g., Bruhn, Niu, Roark)Experience analyzing / dispositioning non-conformancesExperience with analyzing composite and / or metallic structures (sandwich panels, skin-stringer, fittings, etc.)Familiarity with composite failure modes and standard test methods (in-plane, interlaminar, shear, fracture, etc.)Experience with Non-Destructive Evaluation techniquesAnalysis of stability-critical structures (local / global buckling, crippling)Mesh generation experience (e.g., mid-surfacing) and understanding of element typesBolted joint calculations (bolt preload, joint stiffness, shear-tension interaction, insert pull-out)Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate across a diverse teamPreferred Qualifications
Experience with development and / or qualification testing (test requirements, setup / configuration, test predictions, test conduct / monitoring)Process automation experience using scripting languages (Matlab, Python, VBA, Fortran, etc.)Composite design and analysis skills in thermoset, thermoplastic, metal matrix or ceramic matrix compositesExperience with Creo or CATIA V5Compensation
