Job Description : Toolmaker
$60-85K Depending on experience
Toolmaker Qualifications :
- Journeyman Toolmaker certification, apprenticeship completion, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- 3–7 years of experience in toolmaking, die building, or precision machining (mold-making experience is a plus).
- Proficiency in operating and setting up machines (mills, lathes, grinders, surface grinders, etc.).
- Strong understanding of : - Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD) - Heat treatment, metallurgy, and material properties - Tight-tolerance machining and precision assembly
- Ability to read, interpret, and work from complex blueprints, CAD drawings, and engineering specifications.
- Skilled in precision measurement and inspection tools (micrometers, calipers, indicators, CMM equipment).
- Hands-on troubleshooting skills for tool and die repair, modification, and optimization.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles, continuous improvement, and root cause problem-solving.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, with excellent hand–eye coordination and attention to fine detail.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, with strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Safety-conscious mindset and commitment to maintaining a clean, organized work environment.
Toolmaker Key Responsibilities :
Tool & Die Fabrication – Build, fit, and assemble precision tools, dies, molds, jigs, and fixtures to support production needs.Tool Maintenance & Repair – Diagnose issues with worn or damaged tooling, perform repairs or modifications, and restore tools to required tolerances.Blueprint & CAD Interpretation – Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD files, and technical specifications to plan machining and assembly sequences.Precision Measurement – Use micrometers, calipers, gauges, indicators, and CMM equipment to ensure accuracy and adherence to tight tolerances.Process Improvement – Collaborate with engineers and production teams to refine tool designs, reduce cycle times, and improve efficiency.Prototype Development – Support the design and manufacture of prototype tooling, test parts, and specialized fixtures.Material Knowledge – Select appropriate steels, alloys, and coatings for tool durability; oversee heat treatment and finishing processes.Troubleshooting – Analyze production issues related to tooling performance and recommend corrective actions.Documentation – Maintain accurate records of tool designs, modifications, maintenance schedules, and performance logs.Safety & Quality – Follow strict safety standards and quality assurance procedures to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.Collaboration & Training – Work closely with machinists,Pay Details : $65,000.00 to $80,000.00 per year
