Job Summary

The Manager of Vessel Maintenance and Repair is responsible for directing day-to-day engineering operations across G&H Towing's tugboat fleet. This role leads the Senior Port Engineers, Port Engineers, and shoreside mechanics to ensure vessels remain safe, compliant, and operational. The Manager oversees all maintenance, repair, and drydock activities, aligning execution with the Engineering Department's strategy, budgets, and regulatory standards. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, this position serves as the operational leader within the department, ensuring that maintenance and repair efforts are executed efficiently and consistently across the fleet.

Responsibilities, Required Knowledge, Skills

  • Conduct inspections to verify compliance with company standards and regulatory agencies, including AWO RCP
  • Coordinate closely with Operations and Safety Departments to align maintenance with operational needs
  • Coordinate procurement of parts, materials, and services; ensure cost-effective vendor management and supply chain reliability
  • Coordinate the purchasing of parts, supplies, and repair services; manage inventory control
  • Develop and monitor operating budgets for vessel maintenance, repairs, and drydock activities in partnership with the Director of Engineering
  • Develop, execute, and track annual and long-term vessel maintenance budgets
  • Direct the scheduling, planning, and execution of all preventatives, corrective, and emergency maintenance
  • Ensure regulatory compliance (USCG, ABS, AWO RCP, and SMS) through inspections, documentation, and adherence to company maintenance standards
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills, including self-awareness and the ability to deal professionally with others and always make professional judgments
  • Lead and supervise the Engineering Team, including Port Engineers and shore-side mechanics
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records in company software and ensure readiness for audits and regulatory reviews

  • Manage and oversee all drydock projects, shipyard periods, and major repair programs, ensuring safety, quality, and budget control

  • Oversee all preventative and routine maintenance schedules and ensure timely execution
  • Participation in 24 / 7 on-call rotation for emergency repair situations
  • Prepare Safety Management System (SMS) updates as necessary
  • Prepare specifications and manage shipyard periods, drydock projects, and major repairs
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot, test resolutions, and escalate common issues
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Provide daily leadership and supervision to Senior Port Engineers, Port Engineers, and Shoreside Mechanics.
  • Provide input for vessel design, construction, and modifications
  • Review and approve maintenance work orders and supply requisitions
  • Review and approve work orders, requisitions, and invoices related to vessel maintenance and repair
  • Serve as a key point of contact for Operations and Safety teams to align maintenance with vessel deployment and crew needs
  • Serve as department head, enforcing uniform vessel maintenance standards and procedures
  • Serve as primary point of contact for emergency maintenance issues; participate in 24 / 7 on-call rotation
  • Strong communication, organizational, analytical, time management, problem-solving, and planning skills
  • Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex mechanical or electrical issues

Education & Experience

  • A Bachelor of Science in marine engineering or a maritime academy graduate; extensive experience may be considered in lieu of education
  • A minimum of 8–10 years of progressively responsible experience in marine engineering, vessel maintenance, or a related heavy industrial sector
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and negotiation skills
  • Proven leadership experience managing multi-level technical teams
  • Significant experience in both shore-side engineering and vessel-based engineering roles
  • Strong knowledge of marine diesel engines, propulsion systems (including z-drives), electrical systems, and regulatory requirements
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills
  • Technical writing ability for documentation and reporting
  • Requires proficiency with computer hardware and software to include Microsoft Office applications, AutoCAD, using a computer with a keyboard and mouse, navigation with a web browser, checking and sending email, and use of internet search engines. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and maintenance management software; ability to prepare technical documentation and reports
  • Required Licensure & Certifications

  • Requires an active and valid driver's license.
  • Qualifications

  • Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with an engineering license
  • Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) Certification
  • Familiarity with MS Project or other project scheduling tools
  • Experience with inventory or maintenance database systems
  • Working Conditions

  • Work hours will be assigned based on business needs. By request from the department director. Work hours may include irregular hours including weekends, holidays, and after-hours to assist in completing special tasks or assignments; must be accessible 24 / 7 for vessel maintenance emergencies, including weekends, on a rotating basis.
  • Frequent out-of-region travel will be required within the Gulf Coast region. Other travel may be required to attend training, seminars, or work-related events
  • Work will be performed in the office and in the field (vessels, shipyards, ports)

  • Assist the management and executive team when requested to complete special projects and complete all assignments within a negotiated time frame established by the department manager
  • Completion of other duties as assigned by the department manager as it relates to the program and position
