Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV, Shop Supervisor (CDL Training Provided) - Alamosa

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Work Unit

This Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV Shop Supervisor position works in the equipment shop in The Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 5 in Alamosa. This team performs skilled journey level work which requires the application of knowledge and skills to diagnose, repair and modify automotive vehicles, maintenance equipment, and specialized heavy construction equipment. They preserve and assure that the entire fleet of equipment is in safe operating condition aligned with the rules and policies of the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

About the Position

As the Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV, you will supervise and assist 7 mechanics. You will establish work schedules and priorities on equipment and monitor completeness of work. You will ensure that safety and industry workmanship standards are followed in the shop. You will be responsible for providing technical assistance to mechanics, maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment, and preparing reports of shop activities. You will be a working supervisor. Approximately 70% of your time will be spent doing hands-on mechanic work and 30% of your time will be supervising the team.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following :

• Supervise and train mechanics on all types of mechanical work, computer input and use of diagnostic tools, ensuring compliance with all applicable rules.
• Conduct employee performance evaluations, approve employee leave requests and monthly timesheets.
• Mediate as necessary to resolve issues including interpersonal conflicts and informal grievances.
• Schedule work for the field team including repairs, annual inspections, preventive maintenance, paint, body repairs, welding, fabrication and new vehicle setup; inspect quality of their work after completion.
• Schedule training for the team to help keep them stay up to date on current technology, new vehicle setup, removing vehicles from service, and all items pertaining to State Fleet Management vehicles.
• Rebuild, repair, inspect, diagnose and maintain heavy and specialized equipment, such as trucks, loaders, dozers, motor graders, lay down machines and all other asphalt equipment, snow removal equipment, mowers, construction equipment and attachments.
• Perform maintenance on various small engines, pumps and hand tools.
• Maintain a current knowledge on all equipment and technical knowledge to work on all systems including air, hydraulic, fuel, coolant, electric, electronics, and major components of power and drive trains.
• Assist all highway maintenance personnel in analyzing mechanical difficulties and making repairs.
• Anticipate and plan for all equipment needs, including road equipment and other equipment and tools needed to keep shop fully operational.
• Assist in ordering and receiving equipment including reviewing, updating and ordering new equipment and making arrangements to turn in old equipment.
• Schedule preventive maintenance work to be performed by contract vendors
• Assist the team with inputting time and repair codes into SAP.
• Monitor SAP work orders and reports, billing and invoices.
• Work with the Plant Maintenance coordinator to ensure that proper and correct information is on SAP workorders.
• Oversee preventive maintenance to ensure that it follows guidelines.
• Assist the equipment manager with entry of monthly meter readings from State Fleet Management into CARS computer software systems.
• Assist in conducting monthly safety and general information meetings with shop personnel.
• Participate as a member of the Maintenance Leadership Team in meetings
• Other duties as assigned.
• Work schedule will be Monday through Friday 8 : 00-4 : 30
• Occasional travel required during work hoursfor meetings and training
• Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
• Required to operate CDOT vehicles in order to test drive equipment
• Must be physically and able to work in all weather conditions, extreme temperatures and varying altitudes on the side of the road or in theshop
• Exposure to non-weather related hot and cold temperatures
• Exerts more than 100 lbs of force occasionally, and / or 50 lbs of force frequently, and / or up to 20 lbs of force regularly to move objects
• Required to bend, kneel, climb in / out of trucks when maintaining and repairing equipment
• Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions.
• May be required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time – hot and cold
• Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin
• Must be able to hear and communicate via cell phone and state radio torelay information and respond to field calls
• Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties
