Overview

Assists the assigned judge in resolving legal issues and performing research as directed; performs other duties as assigned.

Full salary range for this position is $55,910 - $96,179.

Responsibilities

  • Researches legal issues as directed;
  • Analyzes briefs and case files, making inquiries pertaining to the relevant case;
  • Attends court proceedings and assists the judge as requested;
  • Aids in the preparation of civil and criminal dockets;
  • Drafts judicial opinions;
  • Reviews case files ensuring compliance with Maryland laws and Maryland Rules of Procedure;
  • Communicates with judge, attorneys, litigants, and courthouse staff about cases;
  • Reviews recent laws and briefs the judge of pertinent developments;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary's County Government policies and procedures;
  • Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary's County Government to the public;
  • Knowledge of the law and the preparation of legal documents and materials;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other staff, judges, attorneys, and members of the public;
  • Ability to use available resources to research information;
  • Ability to keep accurate records;
  • Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software, and simple office machines;
  • Excellent communications and analytical skills.

    • Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree;
  • Three or more years of related experience; or additional education in a specialized area;
  • Or equivalent technical training, education, and / or experience.

    • Physical and Environmental Conditions

    Work requires no unusual demand for physical effort.

    Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meetings and training rooms.
