Reports To : Director of Nursing (DON)

Schedule : 12-hour shifts | Days, Nights, or Weekends

Nexus Children’s Hospital – Houston offers structured, inpatient care for children ages 4 to 18 with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). POSITION SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse (RN) plays a vital leadership role in the care and recovery of children and adolescents with autism and developmental disabilities. Reporting to the Director of Nursing (DON), the RN provides clinical oversight, behavioral support, and family education within a safe and structured therapeutic environment.

The RN collaborates closely with the interdisciplinary team—therapists, behavioral specialists, educators, and physicians—to deliver individualized, trauma-informed care that promotes safety, growth, and meaningful progress.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver comprehensive nursing care to pediatric patients, ensuring safety, dignity, and clinical excellence in all aspects of care.
  • Perform nursing assessments, administer medications, and monitor treatment responses in accordance with physician orders and care plans.
  • Provide education, support, and guidance to patients and families to promote understanding and engagement in the treatment process.
  • Maintain a therapeutic environment that promotes structure, stability, and positive behavior.
  • Lead and participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, contributing observations, recommendations, and care coordination input.
  • Support the development and implementation of individualized behavioral and nursing care plans.
  • Utilize approved de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques to maintain patient and staff safety.
  • Mentor and support LVNs, PCAs, and other team members, fostering professional growth and collaboration.
  • Ensure accurate and timely EHR documentation, following all clinical and regulatory standards.
  • Uphold Nexus’ commitment to ethical practice, compliance, and compassionate care.

LICENSURE & CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current Texas RN license – required
  • CPR / BLS Certification – required
  • De-escalation Training – required within 30 days of hire
  • Experience in pediatric behavioral health, autism care, or IDD settings preferred
